A: Hi ,….well, What I want to do today is talk to you about a city in Greece called Santorini and
how tourism affects this city.
A: So, to begin with, Santorini It´s an island with wonderful views, especially during summer
season, in recent years this place has been having a lot of problems because of mass tourism.
A: The are many cons of tourism in Santorini. First, public transportation. There its common to
be quite crowded, especially during peak tourist seasons. Secondly, the loss of the authenticity
of local culture due to the rise of tourist attractions and commercialization. It's not just the arts
and museums, traditional cuisine is also affected.
A: Furthermore, another negative effect is environmental degradation. The increase in tourist
cruises pollutes the surrounding land, water, and air, affecting the quality of life. Speaking of
cleanliness, near Fira, the capital, is the island's garbage dump, just off the main road. The
amount of garbage there has worsened due to the overcrowding brought on by tourism.
A: Also, let me add that there is a higher demand for housing in Santorini. The cost of living has
increased making it difficult for residents to afford rent or buy property.
A: Let´s move on to the pros, tourism offers many job opportunities for locals, and the influx of
tourists always means a greater demand for services such as restaurants, hotels, and tour
guides.. Another point I want to make is that tourism also brings revenue that can be invested
in preserving cultural heritage sites and traditions.
POSSIBLE RESPONSES:
Yeah, I´ve read about that. It can be difficult for both tourist and locals.
Absolutely, oh im sorry. I didn’t mean to cut you off.
Go ahead.
A: Don’t worry. I was just about to finish. But thanks for the reminder. What I wanted to finish
by saying is that... in my opinion, tourism cannot be classified as bad or good, everything
consists of finding the balance between obtaining the benefits of tourism and preserving the
essence of every place.
