Pangolins are fascinating creatures primarily inhabiting Africa and Asia. These scaly mammals are remarkable both for their unique appearance and their critical threat of extinction due to poaching and habitat degradation. In this report, we will delve into the details of pangolins, including their habitat, daily routines, diet, the threats they face, and potential solutions to ensure their survival.
Pangolins are found in various habitats, ranging from tropical rainforests to savannas and wooded areas. They prefer regions with dense vegetation and access to water sources. They are distributed across Asia and Africa, inhabiting countries such as India, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria, and others. Pangolins are adaptable to various climates and can be found in areas ranging from warm tropical zones to cooler regions. Pangolins are nocturnal and solitary animals. They spend most of their time digging underground burrows or resting in trees. They are creatures of routine habits, emerging from their shelters at dusk to seek food. They use their long, sticky tongue to capture insects like ants and termites in underground nests. Pangolins have a highly specialized diet based on insects. Their sticky tongue, which can be longer than their body, allows them to insert it into insect nests and retrieve insects for consumption. Pangolins can consume thousands of insects in a single night, making them effective natural pest controllers. Pangolins face severe threats, with poaching being a major issue. Their scales, composed of keratin, are highly prized in traditional medicine and luxury item manufacturing, leading to illegal demand for pangolins and their parts. Additionally, habitat degradation due to human expansion, deforestation, and the decrease in insects due to agricultural pesticide use also contribute to their decline.
To ensure the survival of pangolins, it is crucial to address these issues comprehensively: Awareness and Education: Education about the importance of pangolins in ecosystems and the threats they face is essential to generate public support.
