2n BATXILLERAT B IES MONTGRÍ 2023
1. Is Wuthering Heights a novel about love? If so, what kind? If not, what is its primary theme? Support your views with examples from the book. When citing examples don’t forget to add who says what and the page where the examples are. Don’t quote, or paraphrase. (Min. 150 words). When I started to read the novel, I believed that this novel was about love because this book represents an unwavering and lasting love, but also symbolizes an impossible love between Catherine and Heathcliff, two persons from different states, because Catherine was from a rich family and Heathcliff was an orphan. This story of these two begins when Heathcliff comes to Wuthering Heights and becomes friends with Catherine. From that moment, Heathcliff fell in love with Cathy, and then she. Even when Hindley wouldn’t let them be together, she and Heathcliff still found ways to be together (Chapter 4. Page 26). But when I finished the novel, I changed my mind because this novel isn’t a love story but it’s about an obsessive love. For example on pages 32 and 33, Catherine tells Nelly that she will marry Edgar without wanting to part with Heathcliff because she loves Heathcliff more than she loves Edgar, and she can’t live without Heathcliff. Another example is when Isabelle tells Nelly that Heathcliff married her for two reasons, one of which is to make Catherine jealous (Chapter 8. Page 53). 2. Compare and contrast Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. (Min.100 words) First of all, I believe that the appearance of the two houses is reflected in the personality of the people who lived in these houses. Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross are located in the Yorkshire moors, a very isolated part of England. As for the appearance, Wuthering Heights was a grey and cold stone house, where the family Earnshaw lived. This family is formed by Mr and Mrs Earnshaw and their children, Catherine and Hindley. I believe that Wuthering Heights’s house symbolizes misery, revenge, and evil in comparison to Thrushcross Grange’s house. On the other hand, Thrushcross Grange was a house that used bright colors, for example, their sitting room had red carpets and fine tables and chairs, where the family Linton lived. The Linton’s is formed by Mr and Mrs Linton and their children, Edgar and Isabelle. I believe that Thrushcross’s house is a rich family and represents luxury, life, and love.
EXERCISE 4
1. There are two narrators in the story. Who are they? Mr. Lockwood, the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, is the first narrator and the second narrator is Nelly Dean, the housekeeper who worked for the family Earnshaw and Linton. 2. Would you say these narrators limit our knowledge of the characters? Explain your answer. Yes, for example, Nelly tells her experience personal details about the two families and the other hand, Mr. Lockwood tells his first impression because he doesn’t know the real story like Nelly. 3. How do you think the story would have been different if Heathcliff had been the narrator? If Heathcliff had been the narrator, the story would have changed completely because instead of having Nelly’s version, we would have had Heathcliff's version. **EXERCISE 5
