Years and Years
I hardly ever watch series

I lack the patience to do so. But sorne weeks
ago, I
carne across an episode of award-winning Russell T Davies'
Years
and Years
and watched it till the end. Starring Emma Thompson and set in
the 2020s,
this bleak futuristic dystopia has kept me glued to my TV screen
since.
lts compelling plot,which shows how shocking world events unfolding over a
fifteen-year period affect the lives of the Lyons siblings and their families, is
to
blame for this. We see financia!adviser Stephen Lyons (brilliantly
portrayed by Rory Kinnear) and his family having to move in with grandma
Muriel after the
country's financia!crisis leaves them practically penniless, or
his sister Edith
being diagnosed with a radiation-related disease after a US
nuclear strike on a
Chinese island where she works as an activist.
The one thing 1might be a tad less enthusiastic about is the dizzying pace at
which events unfold.The series lasting only six episodes,you are left with
very
little time to assimilate the radical changes that take place both
in
the
world
and in the lives of the Lyonses.
Still, Years and Years is arguably the best series of the decade, with its contrast
between a world where one crisis follows another inthe blink of an eye and the
lives of a family who gather for birthdays year after year inspite of these
crises.But mind you, this is not a series for someone who is looking for
entertainment and relaxation . Rather, I would recommend it to those who want to
understand both human nature and the world we live in.
