WHAT ARE THE RELATIVE CLAUSES?

  • (^) We use 'define relative clauses' when we want to give more information about the person or thing we are talking about. Without that information, the sentence will be meaningless.
  • For example (clause after the object of the sentence):
  • (^) I'm looking for a secretary who / that can use a computer well.
  • (^) She has a son who / that is a doctor.
  • We bought a house which / that is 200 years old.
  • (^) I sent a letter which / that arrived three weeks later.

  • (^) Example:
  • (^) These shoes, which I bought last week,

are very uncomfortable.

  • (^) My dog, whic h is called Pancake, is a

vegetarian.

  • (^) My sister, who lives in New York, is

pregnant.

  • (^) The Palace hotel, where many

celebrities stay, is being closed down.

THANKS!
