The various responsibilities of the chief officer in rederei nord, a shipping company. The chief officer is in charge of performing navigation watch duties, overseeing cargo operations, ensuring the stability of the ship, managing ballast tanks, maintaining deck equipment and cargo, handling garbage management, and administering crew rest times and overtime. They are also responsible for the maintenance of sopep equipment, training crew members, and serving as the safety officer. In some cases, the responsibility for pest control may be designated to the 2nd officer. The chief officer is also responsible for maintaining the accommodation area and ordering deck stores.

Responsibilities of the Chief Officer
According to the ISM of the Company “Rederei Nord” (Rederei Nord Safety Management System – RNSMS)
1. The Bridge Navigation Watch: The Chief Officer is responsible for performing vessel
navigation watch duties.
2. The Cargo: He/She is responsible for the entire cargo operation in ports which includes
loading, unloading, and cargo planning.
3. The Stability of the Ship.
4. The Ballast Tanks: Is in charge of the ballast and de-ballasting operation done on
board.
5. The Deck Maintenance: Is in charge for maintenance of cargo gears and cargo carried
on board ship. Also includes the main deck maintenance.
6. The Garbage Management: He/She is responsible for the garbage management for the
deck and accommodation part of the ship.
7. The SOPEP equipment: He/She is responsible for the maintenance of the SOPEP
equipment, and it’s order inside of it.
8. The deck crew overtime: The duties include the administration task of scheduling and
distributing work to deck crew.
9. The deck crew rest time: Also include the administration of the rest time of the crew.
10. The Training Officer: He/She is responsible for the training of the crew members during
the drills.
11. The Safety Officer: He/She is the overall safety in charge of the deck crew.
12. The Pest Control (Can be 2nd Off): This responsibility can be designed to the 2nd Off in
some ships.
13. The cleaning accommodation area: He/She is responsible for the maintenance of the
accommodation.
14. The ordering of deck stores: He/She is responsible of the deck stores and its order.
