Pepper's Theories in Education: Understanding Formism, Mechanism, Contextualism - Prof. Ál, Apuntes de Ciencias de la Educación

Stephen c. Pepper's framework for teaching and learning, which helps teachers understand different world views and adapt to various methodologies. The framework consists of four world views: formism, mechanism, contextualism, and organism. Formism focuses on essence, ideal, and similarity, mechanism on cause and effect, contextualism on change and intensity, and organism on integration and unity. Useful for university students studying education, philosophy, or psychology, and can be used as study notes, summaries, or schemes and mind maps.

How to address the notion of teaching (How we see ourselves when we are teaching)
Brings awareness to the teacher (Why we teach this way)

Match a coherent evaluation of a subject
How to address the notion of learning (How students might learn)
Will help to individualize answers according to the different World Views
Will help students to know themselves so well as to adapt to methodologies
Serves to look at the world (The class) from 4 different World Views
The 4 different world views are 4 ways to solve some issues but each has the same value

We can fit in just one and we might label us as this view
It's important to know what “we are”
Four world views
·Analysis into parts: Formism and mechanism
·Synthesis into wholes : Contextualism and organism
·Dispersive results: Formism and contextualism
·Integrative results: Mechanism and organism
FORMISM (form)
Essence, habit, ideal, model, norm, plan, similarity, tradition
How are A and B similar to others?
MECHANISM (machine)
Amount, cause (effect), efficiency, frequency, location (time-space), parts, quantity, reduction
How does this works?
CONTEXTUALISM (context)
Change, fusion, immediacy, novelty, relative. Vividness, whole
How intense is the experience?
ORGANISM (organ)
