Course:

THIRD SEMESTER “A”

OBJECTIVE

To classify and use singular and plural nouns in medical terminology related to cellular vocabulary through guided reading, collaborative language analysis, listening based noticing tasks, and controlled speaking and writing practice in order to improve their comprehension and production of biomedical English in academic and professional health contexts.

Words ending in “-a” “-ae”

scapul a → scapul ae

vertebr a → vertebr ae

lamin a → lami nae

retin a → reti nae

In medical terminology, many words end in “-a”. To make them plural, the ending changes to “-ae”. These words are often names of body structures. This change helps show that we are talking about more than one structure.

EXAMPLES:

RULE ONE

SINGULAR PLURAL
Many medical terms that end in “-us” in
singular.
To form the plural, the ending “-us”
changes to “-i”.
These words are commonly used to
describe organs, tissues, or small
structures in the body.

Words ending in “-us” “-i”

EXAMPLES:

RULE TWO

SINGULAR PLURAL

Words that end in ‘is’ change to ‘es’ in plural form. This rule comes from Greek origin
words, which are very common in medical and scientific language. When we apply
this rule, the ending ‘is’ is replaced by ‘es’, and sometimes the pronunciation changes
slightly.

Diagnosis → Diagnoses

Thrombosis → thromboses

Neurosis → neuroses

RULE FOUR WORDS ENDING IN^ (IS^ ^ ES)

EXAMPLES:

WORDS ENDING IN (ITIS ITIDES)

Words that end in ‘itis’ change to ‘itides’ in plural form. The suffix ‘itis’ means
inflammation, so it is widely used in medical terminology to describe diseases. When
we use the plural form, we are referring to multiple inflammations or conditions
affecting different parts of the body..

Arthritis Arthritides Gastritis Gastritides Bronchitis Bronchitides

RULE FIVE

EXAMPLES:

If the suffix ends with an “nx” change it to “ges”

eg: Phalanx (sing) to Phalanges (plural)
