*Work can be sent in earlier if you wish.
CA4 Objectives
● write a collaborative group story ● give and respond to feedback from groupmates on your writing ● tell an anecdote about your family
CA4 Feedback & Assessment
CA4 is worth 20% of your Final CA mark. You’ll receive individual feedback of the writing activity in TASK 4.1 for this CA. See Appendix 1 for the assessment criteria for CA4.
In order to pass Continuous Assessment, you must participate in the tasks in all six CAs.
Important: All work you submit for this course must be original. Do not copy-paste from the web or other sources - your contribution must be written in your own words. Any material taken from another source must be credited. For more information, see: http://cv.uoc.edu/adf/~s_eao_0005_u01/plagiarism_IM.htm
Reading 2 25/10/18 - 12/11/
This is the second of three Reading Comprehension exercises. Click on Reading 2 in your classroom. Your mark will be available after the deadline.
Pre-task 4.1 25/10/18 - 27/10/
Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.
Click on this link to do a quick quiz about your reading habits. Send your answers and then look at previous responses to see the results from others.
In TASK 4.1 , you’ll write a story with your group. Look at the CA4 Story prompts document in the classroom and decide with your group which type of story your group will write together.
You’ll do the writing in a chain. The first person writes the beginning and then the next one reads that and continues the story, etc. The last person should write an appropriate ending. Plan the work by deciding who will write which part and establish deadlines. For example:
Title & introduction Body 1 Body 2 Ending
Ana: Tuesday pm Mar: Thursday pm Arnau: Friday am Pedro: Saturday am
2. Give your peers some constructive feedback. For help on this, go to the Text cohesion and Checking your writing sections in the self-correcting exercises in Storytelling Part 1 Communication strategies.
NB: Your feedback should mainly focus on Vocabulary and Coherence. Consider: ● Has the group used all the keywords from the CA4 Story Prompts document? ● Are appropriate synonyms used to avoid repetition? ● Can you see any false friends, such as actual (Catalan/Spanish) ≠ actual (English)? ● Are there any spelling mistakes that need correcting? ● Can the reader follow the sequence of events in your story with your time connectors (e.g. at first, then, afterwards, while, etc.)? ● Are verb tenses and nouns-pronouns consistent throughout the story?
To leave feedback, click on ‘Edit’ > highlight the text you want to comment on > click on the ‘Comment’ button and write your feedback. Alternatively, write your comments below each section in a different colour. Remember to click SAVE when you have finished. DO NOT delete or make changes to other students’ work. When all members of the group have left their comments, inform your teacher who will then provide feedback.
3. Copy the story below the original one or onto a new wiki page and with the feedback you have received from your groupmates and teacher, edit your part to improve it. At the end, your story should be one cohesive piece of writing. 4. When you are all happy with your Group Story, post it to the Forum > CA4 Storytelling.
NB: The mark for this part of CA4 will be the same for all group members that actively participate in writing their individual section, giving feedback and editing the final version sent to the Forum.
Post-task 4.
Read the other stories in the Forum and reply to at least two of them. Answer some (or all!) of the following questions.
● Did you enjoy the story? What was your favourite part? ● Did you think the story was an effective chain story? i.e. Did the parts flow together? ● Would you have chosen a different ending? ● Was there anything you didn’t understand that you would like clarified?
Pre-task 4.2 06/11/18 - 08/11/
Storytelling Part 2 self-correcting exercises
Do the self-correcting exercises in Storytelling Part 2 in Materials in the classroom. They’ll help you widen your vocabulary and revise grammar areas.
Don’t forget to share different vocabulary items, expressions and grammar points that you have learnt in the I’ve learnt something today! folder in the Forum.
TASK 4.2 Guess the ending! 09/11/18 - 12/11/
An online video booth has been set up on your local council website so that citizens can record themselves telling a story about a member of their family. The aim of this initiative is to encourage greater interaction between different generations in the community.
Guess the ending!
Visit the online video booth and tell us a story/anecdote/adventure involving a member of your family (but DO NOT tell us the ending!).
Post your main video answering the following questions in about one minute :
● Who is the story about? Describe the person.
● Where and when did the story happen?
● What were the main events ( DO NOT tell us the ending!)?
Reply to at least two of your classmates’ stories with your guesses as to how they ended. These can be audio or video replies.
Post a follow-up video as a reply to your main video to tell us what the ending of your story actually is so we can see if we guessed correctly!
We can’t wait to see your videos and try to guess how your story ends.
