SUGGESTOPEDIA METHOD FOR LEARNING ENGLISH
Imelda Aisyah Nasution
7th Semester in State Islamic University of North Sumatera
ABSTRACT
English is the most widely spoken language around the world. English as an international language is
required to be known by all people in the world to facilitate international communication. However, very
often English learners find this language a difficult language to learn. So, to overcome problems like this
Georger Lozanov, an educator, psychotherapist and physicist from Bulgaria, created a language learning
method that makes language learners find it easy to learn language. This method, which was created in
1978, is called the suggestopedia method.
Suggestopedia is one of the many methods of learning English in the world. This method is less well
known but in reality in the field, this method is actually often used by language teachers, especially English
in class, without realizing it. This suggestopedia method comes from Bulgaria. This method was first
developed by an educator, psychotherapist and physicist named George Lozanov around 1978. Lozanov
argues that relaxation and concentration techniques can help students to open up their subconscious
resources and be able to acquire and master a larger quantity of vocabulary and also structures that are more
stable than they think.
George based this method on several disciplines such as yoga, classical music, parapsychology and
autogenic therapy, which he said could increase the pace of learning 5 to 50 times the usual rate. Through
training with special techniques, it is possible for students to develop their super memories and be able to
learn a larger quantity of language material in a very short time. In fact, many experts have conducted
research on this suggestopedia, but still more language teachers use the lecture method in teaching language
to their students. The lecture method is considered an easy method and there are not many rules, the teacher
only needs to explain the theory and the students are sufficient to be good listeners. The lecture method
actually makes the interaction between teacher and student very little, that is why it is necessary to develop
language teaching methods for language learners.
Lozanov noted the similarity of hypnosis and suggestion and concluded that there was a difference
between a state of hypnosis and the process of suggestion which occurs in all of the conditions of human
existence. Transcendental Meditation and fantasy trips both utilize relaxation as does the suggestopedic
process. The scope of this study has been limited to Suggestopedia and its application to the American
college classroom.

SUGGESTOPEDIA METHOD FOR LEARNING ENGLISH

ABSTRACT

English is the most widely spoken language around the world. English as an international language is required to be known by all people in the world to facilitate international communication. However, very often English learners find this language a difficult language to learn. So, to overcome problems like this Georger Lozanov, an educator, psychotherapist and physicist from Bulgaria, created a language learning method that makes language learners find it easy to learn language. This method, which was created in 1978, is called the suggestopedia method.

Suggestopedia is one of the many methods of learning English in the world. This method is less well known but in reality in the field, this method is actually often used by language teachers, especially English in class, without realizing it. This suggestopedia method comes from Bulgaria. This method was first developed by an educator, psychotherapist and physicist named George Lozanov around 1978. Lozanov argues that relaxation and concentration techniques can help students to open up their subconscious resources and be able to acquire and master a larger quantity of vocabulary and also structures that are more stable than they think. George based this method on several disciplines such as yoga, classical music, parapsychology and autogenic therapy, which he said could increase the pace of learning 5 to 50 times the usual rate. Through training with special techniques, it is possible for students to develop their super memories and be able to learn a larger quantity of language material in a very short time. In fact, many experts have conducted research on this suggestopedia, but still more language teachers use the lecture method in teaching language to their students. The lecture method is considered an easy method and there are not many rules, the teacher only needs to explain the theory and the students are sufficient to be good listeners. The lecture method actually makes the interaction between teacher and student very little, that is why it is necessary to develop language teaching methods for language learners. Lozanov noted the similarity of hypnosis and suggestion and concluded that there was a difference between a state of hypnosis and the process of suggestion which occurs in all of the conditions of human existence. Transcendental Meditation and fantasy trips both utilize relaxation as does the suggestopedic process. The scope of this study has been limited to Suggestopedia and its application to the American college classroom.

This suggestopedia method can be a savior as well as an alternative for people who think that language learning is difficult, complicated, boring and uninteresting. From the results of research conducted on junior high school students in one of the schools in Gunung Kidul, it was stated that 50% of students thought that listening skills were the most difficult skills in English compared to writing, reading, and speaking. Even though by applying the suggestopedia method, learning English can be done in a way that is easier to understand. This is because students are not directed to memorize vocabulary and then pronounce them, but students are directed to communication actions.

As described by Lozanov himself, in his article entitled Suggestology and Suggestopedy which was published (Blair, 1982: 146 159), and which is taken in essence in this book, the suggestopedia is based on three assumptions, namely: a) learning that involves the function of conscious and subconscious human functions, b) students are able to learn faster than with other methods,

c) the teaching and learning process can be hampered by several factors, namely;

  1. general norms and constraints of the prevailing constraints in society,
  2. less harmonious and relaxed atmosphere is absent or lacking in language teaching, and
  3. the strength of the strength or potential potential in students that the teacher does not / are not used to. As Lozanov said in Bancroft, 2005: 16-55, the purpose of the Suggestopedia method was created to free students' minds from established negative assumptions (Lozanov in Bancroft, 2005: 16-55). The negative assumption referred to by Lozanov is the assumption that learning foreign languages, especially English, is a difficult, boring and uninteresting thing. Therefore Lozanov created this suggestopedia learning method. According to Bancropf in Tarigan (2009), there are 5 basic elements in the suggestopedia method, namely:
  1. Authority, namely the existence of a kind of teacher whose abilities can be trusted to make students believe and believe in themselves (self confidence).
  2. Infantilization, where students seem like children who receive authority from the teacher. Bushman (1176: 26) explains that learning like children releases students from the confines of more intuitive learning.
  3. Dual communication, namely verbal and non-verbal communication in the form of encouragement from the state of the room and personality of the teacher.
  4. Rhythm The lessons are accompanied by rhythm, to create a comfortable inner atmosphere and stimulate the right brain to be active.
  5. Pseuda-passive state, in this element the students are really relaxed, but don't sleep while listening to classical music. There are several techniques in applying the Suggestopedia learning method:

the dependent variable of two groups of subjects, where one group was given the independent variable. Experimental research is research that is carried out by manipulating which aims to determine the consequences of manipulation on the observed individual behavior (Latipun, 2010: 8). Manipulation is carried out in the form of certain actions against the group and after that the effects are seen. This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of a treatment given deliberately by the researcher. In this study, the manipulation was carried out in the learning activities of the Suggestopedia method and the effects would be seen after the learning method was implemented using the Suggestopedia, while the measurement was carried out before and after learning.

Area of Study The purpose of this study was to see how effective the use of the suggestopedia teaching method is in the classroom. In the class, all things related to the suggestopedia will be done both in terms of technique and step by step in suggestopedia. That is why the participants of this study were elementary school students.

Research result According to Bowen, T (Macmillan Pulishers Ltd., 2002) argues that the Suggestopedia method is able to teach 25 times faster than conventional language learning, such as research conducted by Lozanov himself in 1978 on school students who were able to memorize 1000 words in one hour using the method. Suggestopedia and get a positive effect from the use of classical music as an effort to memorize Russian. In addition, the results of research by Charles Adamson (Miyagi University Press, 1980) on students learning Russian using the Suggestopedia method, it was noted that with three hours they could learn Russian alphabets, basic sentence structures, and 156 words with a success rate of 98% as well as success. other students.
