Rebecca-Daphne du Maurier Azelen Gabriela Stoian 1ºBach D Summaries Introduction: Last night the speaker dreamed that she was returning to Manderley. The mansion was as beautiful as ever. He dreamed that he was living there happily and safely. But he knew they could never be happy at Manderley. They would never be free from Rebecca. He didn't tell Maxim about his dream. They never spoke of Manderley again. It is no longer yours. Hatred and the devil destroyed him. They will never go back to England. This small island in the Mediterranean was now his home. They have lost a lot but she has grown up and is now a woman. She is no longer the shy and scared girl who came to Manderley. Maybe now she is boring but she is with her husband and it is all she needs. They are already far from fear. Chapter 1: She worked for Mrs. Van Hopper as a maid and chaperone. Mrs. Van Hopper was never satisfied or content with what she did. They went on vacation to Monte Carlo and at the hotel he met Maxim de Winter. When he saw Maxim de Winter he told him that he was very sad. They went to have tea with him and Mrs. Van Hopper who couldn't stop talking. Once in his room, Maxim sent him a note that said "Excuse me, I have been very rude." Chapter 2: Mrs. Van Hopper woke up the next day with the flu and couldn't get up. The narrator came down to the restaurant to eat and Maxim de Winter invited her to his table. They talked a lot, he forgot his subtlety. He told him that I liked drawing (sketching) and that he wanted to draw some old houses that he had seen in the village. Maxim offered to drive her in his car. Maxim spoke of his Manderley house, a very beautiful and very large house. I give him a book of poetry. The book was signed: "Max, Rebecca May 17". Mrs. de Hopper had told him that Rebecca was Maxim's wife who had died. Chapter 3: the narrator was 21 years old and Winter was the first and only man she wanted. Mrs. Van Hopper stayed in bed for 10 days because of what happened those 10 days with Maxim. Chapter 4: The day Van Hopper was able to get up, he said he wanted to go to New York to see his daughter Helen. He wanted to leave tomorrow morning. The narrator was very sad because she loved Maxim and on top of that she couldn't tell him that she was leaving because she was not in her room. So early in the morning she went to her room to tell him she was leaving. Maxim asked him why he was leaving. He told her that because she was nobody, she had nothing and that she only had her job with her. Maxim asked him if he wanted to go to Manderley with him. I ask him if he needed a secretary. He replied that he was asking her to marry him !!! He said yes. I asked you to come with her and tell Mrs. Van Hopper. she went to her room while Maxim was talking to Mrs. Van Hopper. Then he went to say goodbye to her and told her that he was smarter than she thought and asked me how I did it? she was very young and shy but she was to be Mrs. de Winter and she was going to live in Manderley. Mrs. Van Hopper told him that Maxim was marrying her because he didn't want to be alone and that of course he didn't want her. Chapter 5: They arrived in Manderley in May after going on their honeymoon. Upon arrival all the servants and servants were in line waiting for the narrator and Maxim. Maxim introduced her to Mrs. Danvers, the housekeeper. She was a cold woman, full of hatred towards her for having married Maxim. All the servants fear him. He said he had prepared a room for them in the east wing. When Rebecca was alive, they used the rooms in the
west wing. Maxim showed him the Manderley Gardens, especially the rose garden. He didn't feel comfortable in Manderley, everything reminded him of Rebecca. Even the dog Jasper had met her Chapter 6: Maxim's sister, Beatrice, and her husband came to eat and meet the narrator. After breakfast, Maxim left and she was left alone. Frith, the servant, told her that Rebecca always spent the morning in the morning room, it was hot there. Suddenly the phone rang, a voice asked for Mrs. de Winter and said that she had died. The voice said it was Mrs. Danvers asking if you had seen the menu for today. Hanging up, she felt embarrassed. Chapter 7: Beatrice and her husband arrived while Maxim had not yet arrived. She didn't want to see them alone so she opened a door, got lost in Manderley, and Mrs. Danvers found her in the west wing of the house. He said that if he wanted to visit the house, he had to tell him. I take her to Beatrice and her husband. Also with them was Frank Crawley, Maxim's lawyer. Beatrice asked her many questions, I asked her how she met Maxim, and she told her about Mrs. Van Hopper. He asked him if he got along with Mrs. Danvers. He told her that he was surely going to hate her because she admired Rebecca. Chapter 8: Maxim took her to visit with Jasper the "Happy Valley" of Manderley, a valley divided by a path with shrubs and flowers on both sides. Chapter 9: At the end of the valley they came to a bay. Jasper ran off and she followed him. I take her to a cottage on the water. There was a man on the beach who Jasper was barking at. She went to the cottage to get a rope to tie Jasper up. The little house had furniture and books and was full of dust. When she went to find Jasper, the man told her that "she" would no longer return to the house, that she has gone out to sea. The man was talking about Rebecca who had drowned in the sea. When Maxim saw her, he was angry, for having entered the cottage, and said that he should never have taken him to Manderley. That they should have gone somewhere else. Chapter 10: The priest's wife came to see her to meet her and to ask her if this year they were going to organize the Manderley Nancy Dress Ball again. She told him they hadn't decided yet without telling him that Maxim hadn't even told her. She said that Rebecca organized it very well and that every year it was a party highly anticipated by everyone. He said that Rebecca was the most beautiful, smartest woman in the world and that Maxim was very lucky to have had her as a wife. Then Frank came to Manderley. I ask him about the little house on the bay. She said Rebecca slept there often, She said Rebecca died on her boat, capsized and sank with her inside. They found his body 2 months later, the sea had carried him 40 miles from the coast and Maxim had to go to recognize the body. She asked Frank if Rebecca was beautiful and he replied that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Chapter 11: She didn't see Danvers much. He called me every day on the phone to ask me about the menu and that's it. She was sorry. Surely every time he called her "Mrs. de Winter" he thought of his beloved Rebecca. Beatrice gave her 4 books on painting (sketching) and she put them on a shelf in the morning room and as they weighed so much one fell and broke a porcelain statuette (a china cupid). She put the pieces in an envelope and hid it in a drawer like a little girl would. The next morning Frith told Maxim that Robert was very upset that Mrs. Danvers had accused him of having taken a very valuable statuette from the study. She had to tell Maxim it was her and Maxim told Mrs. Danvers. Maxim told her that she acted like a girl but that now she was Mrs. de Winter, he told her that maybe he had been very selfish in marrying her, that he was much older than
boat when she died since they had already found Rebecca's body. When Maxim arrived, he said that Rebecca had won. He told the protagonist the truth about Rebecca's death. Said he had killed her, shot her in the little house, and locked her in the ship and sunk it. Chapter 18: The truth is, Maxim hated Rebecca. They never loved each other. When he married her, his happiness lasted 5 days. Then Rebecca told her that she was going to live as she wanted and that she would see all the men she wanted. I put up with it because it made Manderley beautiful. For Maxim, only Manderley mattered. To the narrator for the first time she understood that Rebecca had never counted for Maxim. Maxim told the narrator that Rebecca had a flat in London where she saw men. At first he was careful that no one found out about his lovers but little by little he brought them to Manderley's cottage. He even took Gilles, Beatrice's husband. Farell stayed a lot in the cottage too. The night he killed her, she came back from London very late and Maxim couldn't take that situation anymore. Farell was thought to be with her in the little house so she grabbed a pistol to force him out of his house. But when she got to the house Rebecca was alone and she told him that she was pregnant but that he was not the father and that she would never know who the father was. She laughed at him and he shot her. He lifted her onto the ship, made holes in the ground, and let the ship sink. The problem now was that they had found the ship and that they were going to see that Rebecca's body was there and that Maxim lied when he recognized her body 2 years earlier. Chapter 19: Colonel Julyan came to Manderley to tell him that there was going to be a trial so Maxim could explain everything he knew about the night Rebecca died and why he had identified Rebecca. All the newspapers talked about that story. Maxim told the narrator that he was glad he killed Rebecca, who was the demon. Chapter 20: At the trial, Maxim said that he truly thought the body he had seen was Rebecca's. The expert who saw the boat told the judge that someone must have made the 3 holes in the floor of the boat, which was not normal. The trial lasted all day and part of the night, it was so hot in the court that the narrator was almost going to pass out so Frank brought her home. She already thought they were going to charge Maxim with murder. Chapter 21: Maxim returned home and the judge had said that Rebecca had committed suicide. Favell came under veils to tell Maxim that Rebecca couldn't have committed suicide because the night she died, she had left him a note telling him to come see her at the cottage because she had something important to say to him. Favell was sure that Maxim had killed her. And he asked for money. But Maxim called the police to have Favell show him the note. He was no longer afraid of anyone. Colonel Julyan came, Favell told him everything, but since he was drunk, he didn't believe him. Chapter 22: Colonel Julyan told Favell that he needed a witness so he could charge Maxim with murder. Favell sent for Ben, the man who was always near the house. Ben came but to the Colonel's questions he only said that he did not know anything, the poor man was very scared. Favell asked Danvers to come talk to the police. The Colonel asked her if it was true that Rebecca was in love with Favell. Danvers replied that Rebecca was not in love with Favell, Maxim, or anyone else, she only loved herself. I ask her if there was a reason for Rebecca to commit suicide and she said no. The Colonel asked him to give him Rebecca's diary. When they looked at the day of her death, Rebecca had gone to London to see a certain "Baker." On other pages, there was Baker's phone number. Frank called and said he was a doctor. Maxim and I knew that they were going to find the truth, the doctor was going to tell them that Rebecca was pregnant and that she had no reason to commit suicide.
Chapter 23: The next day the narrator, Maxim, Favell, and the Colonel went to London to see Dr. Baker. First Dr. Baker told them that he did not know any Mrs. de Winter. But on the day of Rebecca's death, a certain "Danvers" came. Rebecca had changed her name. Dr. Baker said that Rebecca was very ill and had little left to live. The news was a shock to everyone. They all had the reason why Rebecca had committed suicide. Chapter 24: Maxim was already safe and wanted to be able to love himself in peace. They left the Colonel with a sister he had in London and returned to Manderley at night. Maxim called Frank to tell him about the doctor and said that Danvers had left Manderley. When they got near Manderley, we saw lights in the sky, Manderley was burning. Alternative ConclusionAlternative Conclusion Honestly, I didn't like the end of the novel "Rebecca". For me it was a bit strange ending. Having such a good story so that ending does not agree with the great story that the novel has. According to me, it would change many things in the novel. Like the following idea that occurred to me: Maxim and the narrator would return from London. Already there, in Manderley they decided to fire Danvers for being a bad person with the narrator and being Rebecca's partner to change her name at the doctor. After that, Maxim would take Rebecca's things to make a bonfire by burning those material things. So he wouldn't keep seeing Rebecca's presence around the Manderley house. Maxim and the narrator decide to reform Manderley in their own way, leaving Rebecca behind so that they can live a normal life and enjoy their marriage without conflict over the past. I would end the last chapter of the novel like this. This is how the novel would end between one or two chapters. I think the rewritten ending has been very short but in my opinion it is a basic idea to start developing the final chapter.
