Surrealism was a cultural movement that developed in Europe after the first worl ward in which artists depicted disturbing and illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself. Its goal was, according to leader André Breton, "to resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality into an absolute reality, a super-reality," or surrealit
Surrealism often features elements or images that are not normally found together, creating a striking effect.
Although it is a unique movement, there are different techniques and approaches within surrealism. Some of these include: This technique is based on the belief that creativity arises from the subconscious. Surrealist artists often used automatism to "draw" from their subconscious, creating art without consciously thinking about what they were doing.
The Surrealist movement emerged in 1924 in France from André Bretón who had studied the doctrines of Freud and psychoanalysis, and Surrealism was a reaction against the cultural and political conventions of the time. According to Breton, Surrealism was a means of reuniting the conscious realm with the unconscious. In this way, it would be possible to unite the rational world with the world of dreams and fantasies into an absolute reality or "surreality."
Many surrealist artists drew inspiration from their dreams to create illogical and disturbing images.
