UNIT FIVE: TEXT QUESTIONS
Review Questions
1. What is the difference between an internal
combustion engine and an external combustion
engine?
The external combustion engine ignites its fuel outside of the
engine, while the internal combustion engine ignites its fuel inside
the engine.
2. How is the field of physics related to mechanical
engineering?
On the way engineering observes objects at rest and the dynamics
of objects in motion, both inherent concerns of mechanics.
3. Explain the law of conservation of energy and
why it is important for mechanics.
It states that energy is continuous; it cannot be created or
destroyed, only altered from one form to another. It’s important
because it lets us create very precise laws which connect to
each other.
4. What is the goal of improving combustion
modes?
Converting thermal energy and increasing the efficiency of the
vehicle.
5. What are the advantages of a higher degree in
engineering?
Most relative positions pay a median wage of about $83,000 a year
Critical Thinking Questions
1. What invention would you argue has most
impacted mechanical engineering? Explain your
answer.

Review Questions

  1. What is the difference between an internal combustion engine and an external combustion engine? The external combustion engine ignites its fuel outside of the engine, while the internal combustion engine ignites its fuel inside the engine.

  4. What is the goal of improving combustion modes? Converting thermal energy and increasing the efficiency of the vehicle.
  5. What are the advantages of a higher degree in engineering? Most relative positions pay a median wage of about $83,000 a year

Critical Thinking Questions

  1. What invention would you argue has most impacted mechanical engineering? Explain your answer.

The wheel. The world would be completely different without them and they have been a constant feature of human transport devices. We wouldn’t have the facilities that we have nowadays to travel around the world.

  1. Unlike classical mechanics, which has been around for centuries, the field of Quantum Mechanics is relatively new. Why do you think this sub-discipline has recently emerged? Because it wasn’t a basic need. We use them for improving our lives; even though we have great ones. It helps us understand better the world but centuries ago that wasn’t what the people needed.
  2. If nothing can ever be at absolute zero, why does the concept exist? It exists just to explain what could never happen, or what would be the opposite of what we know.
  3. When discussing Material Science, the author states, "The amount of existing materials on Earth is limited by nature and human knowledge." Explain what this means to a material scientist. It means that the only materials they can use or study is defined by what exists. They can’t invent new materials from what isn’t proof.
  4. Why do you think that those in mechanical engineering often do not have specializations as other fields of engineering do? Because they don’t mind working on different places and jobs, they can work with anything which is explained to them and fit in every field that involves mechanical engineering.
