TOPIC 1: INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS LOGISTICS
The geographical separation between buyers and sellers makes necessary moving goods
and services from their place of production to consumers.
Nowadays, customers demand more than ever, and they demand characteristics like high
quality, personalized products or fast delivery. Then, to obtain the right product or service
implies to be in the right place, at the right moment and at the desired conditions.
Therefore, current markets require new business strategies.
1. D IFFERENCE B ETWEEN LO GIS TI C AND S UPPLY CHAIN MANAGE ME NT
- Logistics: Getting the right product or service in the right place, at the right time and at
the desired conditions. A functional area of a business like marketing or administration.
- Supply Chain Management: Integrates key process in business (including Marketing,
Operations, Production…). Manage a business by processes.
2. S UPPLY C HA IN L OG ISTICS NE TWORK
It’s a set of firms that are linked through relationships with other companies in different
processes and activities that produce value in the form of products and services to the final
consumer. All companies below to one or more logistics networks.
Elements: Suppliers, manufacturers, distributors…
Flows in the logistics network: Materials, information, financial, knowledge, services.
Constraints and requirements: Capacity, capital, human resources, reduced delivery
time, customer service, distance, costs. In the past, the firms are formed by different
areas with low or inexistent communication between them. Nowadays this has
changed, we integrate all in a global system. Example: If we want to create a new
product, we have to share all with all the departments since it’s not a task for one person,
it’s a task for more than one person or department.

1. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOGISTIC AND SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT

  • Logistics: Getting the right product or service in the right place, at the right time and at the desired conditions. A functional area of a business like marketing or administration.
  • Supply Chain Management: Integrates key process in business (including Marketing, Operations, Production…). Manage a business by processes. 2. 3. BUSINESS LOGISTICS

Is the process and activities that create value focused on the design and administration of a system to control the timing and geographical positioning of raw material, work-in- process and finished inventory at the lowest total cost (time and distance). Logistics is the combination of a firm’s order management, inventory, transportation, and warehouse management activities as integrated throughout a facility network. Business Logistics have to take the customer as the center of all the decisions. 3.1 HOW CAN YOU CARRY OUT AND EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT OF THESE ACTIVITIES?

  • Operations decisions: Deliver tomorrow morning.
  • Tactical decisions: Decide between own distribution or subcontract it.
  • Strategic decisions: Decide where to locate the warehouse.

4.6. TRANSPORTATION MANAGEMENT

One of the main decisions of Business Logistics. Link between the company, suppliers and consumers.

  • Inbound transportation: Supplier Organization
  • Middle transportation: Organization Warehouse
  • Last mile transportation: Organization Final consumer 4.7. INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS IN LOGISTICS How to use this informatic systems to provide good quality services to demanding clients. 4.8. SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS Today is very important due to the increase of the concern of environmental. So, the goal is to develop sustainable logistical systems that reduce environmental impact. 5. LOGISTICS IN THE COMPANY Discuss integrated and coordinated decisions involving the following areas: Marketing, Manufacturing, Distribution and Retailing, like a wheel.
  • Logistics: Deliver a raw material, work-in-process, finished good. Integration and coordination between production and marketing. Between Marketing and Production.
  • Marketing: Manage the customers, get sales.
  • Production: Manufacture a produce, delivery a service.

5.1. OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT AND MARKETING INTEGRATION

Marketing: Makes a promise and creates expectation. Example: Delivery tomorrow morning. Operations and Logistics: Fulfill this expectation and making possible delivery tomorrow morning. If the experience coincide with the expectation, the client will be happy.

    1. PROCESS ACTIVITIES
  • Planning: Processes needed to operate an existing supply chain.
  • Sourcing: Selection of suppliers that will deliver the goods and services needed to create the firm’s product.
  • Making: Producing the major product or service.
  • Delivering: Logistics processes such as selecting carriers, coordinating the movement of goods and information, and collecting payments from customers.
  • Returning: Receiving worn-out, excess, and/or defective products back from customers. This process it happen eventually.
