What is an eating disorder?

Eating disorders are a type of serious mental

health condition characterized by severe

disturbances in eating behaviors and related

thoughts and emotions. Typically, people with

ED develop an unhealthy preoccupation with

food and body size, weight or shape.

About the

Disease

Binge eating disorder is characterized by frequent periods of excessive overeating, often when not hungry, followed by intense feels of shame, self-disgust and depression similarly to bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by regular and uncontrolled short episodes of over-eating followed by methods of purging.

Is characterized by restriction of food intake leading either to weight loss or failure to gain weight, such that it results in a significantly low body weight according to one’s age, sex and height

This is a category used to recognize and classify other constellations of eating disorder symptoms that do not fit into the above three categories.

The most recent version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) recognizes four sub-categories of eating disorders:

Bulimia nervosa (BN)

How does social media affect an eating

disorder?

Most of teenagers feel that they are not enough because of
social media, they see models and actresses have a skinny
and a “perfect” body and they think because they don’t
look the same they are not worthless, these can lead them
to stop eating or start vomiting to get into the established
beauty standard.

Body Positivity

Society is changing and nowadays we have movements like body positivity that helps people to love their body and embrace other people to not judge or comment about another body that is not theirs, hopefully these can change the perspective and help people that are struggling with body image and eating disorders to feel more comfortable in their own skin.
