NOTOMYS:
Characteristics:
All are brown or beige, losing intensity to pale greys or whites, have very long tails and, as the
common name implies, well-developed hind legs. About half of the kangaroo rat species have
become extinct since European colonisation. The primary cause is probably predation by
introduced dogs or cats, and by competition for food with cattle and rabbits.
Habita:
Restricted to eastern Wheatbelt in Western Australia and in open
forests.
Food:
Its main food is the seeds or small weeds in the soil.
Reproduction:
The reproductive period lasts most of the year, about seven litters per
female per year. Gestation lasts 22 days and gives birth to an
average of five puppies. So in one year they can breed more or less
35 voles.
