Read Grabe (2010): Applied Linguistics: A Twenty-First-Century and answer the following questions:
1. On the basis of the information provided by Grabe, complete the following chart. Which conclusions can you draw regarding the scope of Applied Linguistics? Decade Focus of Applied Linguistics 1950s The term reflected there could be applied to in some cases first language literacy and it is also applied to second language teaching. 1960s Language assesment, language policies and a new field of second language acquisition focused more on learning rather tan just teaching, that is when applied linguistics became involved in al lof these. Applied linguistics started to appear as a real problem-solving enterprise 1970s This one was seen as a discipline that goes to a real-world languange based in only problems. 1980s Applied linguistics got bigger in a systematic way aparto f language teaching and language learing in problems such as language assessment, language policy and planning, translation… 1990s Applied linguistics emphasis on nations of language awareness, learning and attentionm this one focuses in which are the forms for language learning. What language teaching wanted was to be more communicative in critic studies like critical awarness, pedagogy, students rights, the descriptive use of language… 2. What is the central issue in Applied Linguistics? Has it changed in the same way as its scope? The central problem is basically that Applied linguistics is grounded in real world problems and issues, so this issue has not changed at all but it has become bigger. 3. Why is Generative Linguistics not dominant in Applied Linguistics? Which are the competing approaches for linguistic analysis that are growing recognition, instead? Why are they preferred to the generative approach? Because Generative Linguistics is not real, this one is a fixed model. Because Applied Linguistics makes use of not only linguistics like in the very beginning but also with different disciplines such as anthropology, psychology or sociology. 5. Why do some scholars claim that Applied Linguistics is not a discipline? What is the author’s point of view? Why? Because they say that Applied Linguistics has become too big to be a simple discipline. Grabe in the text, says that it has core and periphery, so for him it is a discipline.
