Composition 1: A formal letter
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to inform you that, unfortunately, I am not able to attend on the start
day.
A few days ago, my grandfather fell down the stairs and suffered a brain injury.
He had been in the hospital until today and now he will return home. I am
looking for a nurse to take care of him but I have not found one yet. For this
inconvenience, I have to look after him every day. I suppose I will find a nurse
by next week but until I do not find one I could not work.
In fact that this has happened does not mean that my commitment to your
company has changed. For this reason, I propose that instead of working face-
to-face I could work from my home. In this way, I will still be working as well as I
will be aware of my grandfather’s health. If this is option is not possible, I also
offer to work at weekends or work overtime to compensate for these days I
have not work.
I hope we can reach an agreement; I apologize again for all the inconvenience I
may cause you. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
