Oliver Twist: A Social Critique

Oliver Twist, published in 1838 , tells the story of an INNOCENT ORPHAN who is subjected to the cruel conditions of a workhouse. The novel highlights several social ISSUES: WORKHOUSES Dickens criticized these institutions, which were based on the belief that POVERTY was due to LAZINESS. ● Instead of helping the poor, workhouses often made their lives even harder. ➢ Oliver’s life there is marked by HUNGER and HUMILIATION, especially when he boldly asks for “more” food , shocking his guardians and setting his journey in motion. CHILD EXPLOITATION Oliver, like many Victorian children, faces CRUELTY and NEGLECT. ● Dickens uses his story to show how children were often forced into crime or hard labor , with little chance for a better future. ➢ He is soon caught up in FAGIN’S GANG, forced into a life of street crime alongside other exploited children. ● Through Oliver’s INNOCENCE, Dickens sheds light on the injustices of his time and advocates for social reform.

Dickens’s Style and Purpose
