today there is an active debate about education and it’s quality. In my
experience, there are both advantages and disadvantages that
characterise Italian school; but also there is something that need to be
changed or improved.
Italian school is often considered as one of the worst in the world, but I
can demonstrate how, actually, it presents advantages and
disadvantages, like any other school in the world.
the majority of the italian students leave school or university with
relevant results, and it is a statistical fact that, once they finish school,
italian students have a broad preparation, compared to other countries.
this happens because italian school allows equal access to all the social
classes; in addition it offers a broad general culture allowing students to
study both scientific and humanistic subjects (even if students think that
is something that needs to be changed). Thirdly, thanks to PCTO, the
school allows students to put into practise what they learned at school
through a first approach to the working world; it also give them the
opportunity to sign a contract of employment as soon as they finish
school (even if there are some changes that should be done in the
organisation of this opportunity).
as regards to the disadvantages, it’s important to say that italian school
is considered as one of the most stressful in the world. this is due to
programs that are considered boring and heavy from the students, who
feel unable to express their opinions and creativity. Italian students
consider school a nuisance, because it often happens that the most
deserving students are not given the right recognition, and form this
reason they don’t study as they should. Last but not least, a very
important problem is the inaccessibility of the school structures: they are
falling apart and there is a huge lack of adequate controls.
Therefore, in my opinion, there are some changes or improvements that
should be made: first of all more accessibility checks to school’s
structures should be done; secondly the efficiency and organisation of
PCTO should be improved, because often the companies exploit
students. Lastly, italian students agree that school should allow students
to choose to study the subjects they like the most, based on the
American model, because in this way they would be more inclined to
attend lessons.
In conclusion, I can say that the italian school system isn’t one of the
worst in the world, as it has always trained great minds, even though
there are changes that should be made to make it more modern and
encourage students to attend school.
