HAMLET

Hamlet is one of the works of William Shakespeare, set in the Elsinore Castle in Denmark during the Middle Ages. And Hamlet is the longest play written by William Shakespeare. The story is divided into five acts:

ACT I

In the first act, the king, Hamlet’s father , dies suddenly in tragic circumstances and his brother Claudius succeeds him to the throne and marries Queen Gertrude, who has been left a widow.

And Hamlet is told that the cause of death was a snake bite , even though no fang marks were found on the body

One night some officers on night watch see a strange apparition that looks like the dead king , so they inform Hamlet , who decides to stand guard that night. The ghost appears again and: -says (dichiara) that he is the spirit of the dead king -reveals that he was poisoned by his brother Claudius -sks Hamlet to avenge his murder

- and the spirit also says that Claudius and the queen had a relationship even before his death.

ACT II

After the revelation of the ghost, Hamlet begins to behave strangely with Ophelia , the daughter of Polonius. Frightened by his behavior, Ophelia tells everything to her father and Polonius thinks that Hamlet has gone mad because he is in love with his daughter and he wants to tell the king.

Meanwhile, Claudius and Gertrude invite two childhood friends of Hamlet , Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, to find out the reason for the prince’s strange behavior. When Polonius meets Hamlet, the prince pretends to be mad in order to hide his real thoughts.

Meanwhile a travelling theatre company arrives at the castle and Hamlet asks the actors to perform a tragedy called “The Murder of Gonzago” , because in this tragedy a queen marries the murderer of her husband. Hamlet also asks them t o add a scene written by him, which represents the murder of his father.

This is an example of “play-within-the-play”. (play performed as part of the plot of another play) Hamlet uses this performance to observe Claudius’s reaction and understand if he is really guilty.

ACT III

After observing Hamlet’s behavior, Polonius convinces Ophelia to refuse to meet him, and Polonius and the king hide to observe the prince’s reaction. Hamlet speaks to Ophelia very harshly : he insults her and tells her to go to a convent. At this point Claudius understands that Hamlet is not mad because of love, but that he is troubled by another secret reason.

During the performance of the tragedy, Claudius watches the scene of the king’s murder and when he sees this scene he stands up and leaves the room. This behavior convinces Hamlet that his uncle is really guilty , but Claudius also understands that Hamlet has discovered his crime and that he may soon take revenge.

Shortly after, the queen calls Hamlet to speak with him and Polonius hides behind a curtain to listen to their conversation. During the dialogue Hamlet hears a noise behind the curtain and, thinking it is Claudius, he strikes with his sword. In reality Polonius is behind the curtain and he is killed.

ACTS IV and V

After her father’s death, Ophelia goes mad with grief and soon after she dies by falling into a stream. Her brother Laertes wants to avenge the death of Ophelia and that of Polonius.

Claudius therefore organizes a duel between Laertes and Hamlet, but he prepares a plan to kill the prince. In fact: -Laertes’s sword is sharp, while Hamlet’s is not -Laertes poisons the tip of his sword -Claudius also poisons the wine he wants to offer to Hamlet.

However, during the duel: -Laertes mortally wounds Hamlet -the swords fall to the ground and the two exchange them without noticing.

Themes

Hamlet is a revenge tragedy, but in the play many themes are present: 1-At the beginning there is both the theme of death and at the same time the theme of love between father and son , introduced by the ghost of Hamlet’s father.

2-Then , in the description of the plot, the theme of guilt emerges → the guilt of Hamlet’s mother, who is a victim of Claudius.

3- The love between mother and son is highlighted , but it is intertwined with guilt, giving great complexity to the family relationship.

4- Then there is the theme of revenge → in fact Hamlet seeks revenge, but he hesitates because he is a very complex and sensitive character.

5- Then there is the theme of suspicion, which affects both Hamlet and many other characters. In fact: At the beginning Hamlet suspects his uncle, then Ophelia and Hamlet also become suspicious of each other, finally, when Hamlet discovers the plot of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, he is shocked by his suspicions about everyone.

In general in the story: -Hamlet’s actions (and also his lack of decisions) show how difficult it is to distinguish between appearance and reality and to make choices.

-At the end of the play , Hamlet’s sacrifice , who gives his life to restore his father’s kingdom, compensates for the corruption of his uncle and Hamlet’s difficulty in making decisions.
