NON VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Verbal language:
Grammar (syntax, morphology, phonology), lexicon, pronunciation
Discourse Practices and Genres (concerning language use)
Non-Verbal language:
Prosodic aspects of speech (pitch, voice quality, tone of voice, volume, etc.)
Body language (eye gaze, facial expressions, hand gestures and body movements).
Timing, smell, hair, shoes, outfit…
Interactions are either symmetrical or complementary
•In symmetrical relationships, people mirror each other’s behavior.
•In complementary relationships, people engage in opposite behaviors (e.g., one speaks the other is silent)
high intelligence:
- rather prolonged face - broader distance between the eyes - larger nose - slight upturn to the corners of
the mouth - sharper, pointing, less rounded chin.
lower intelligence:
- broader, more rounded faces - eyes closer to each other - shorter nose - declining corners of the mouth -
rounded and massive
Function of non-verbal messages
Substituing, emphasizing,contradicting,regulating.
Factors affecting interpretation of non-verbal language
Context,cluster,congruence,consistency,culture.
Social intelligence:
The ability to navigate in social situations / interpersonal relations
An aggregated measure of self- and social- awareness
The ability to • get along with others • understand people’s emotions, motivations, and intentions • get
people to cooperate with you.
Emotional intelligence:
The ability to
- be aware of, control and express one’s own emotions
- be aware of others’ emotions and feelings
- use this knowledge to guide thinking and actions
