The Business Model Canvas. The Business Model Canvas is a fundamental document for small and medium enterprises and startups that contains strategic and organizational solutions by which the company creates, distributes and captures value. This tool summarizes the guidelines of the business plan and is used to realize their business idea, to assess the launch of a new product or control variables of a project.
About my project, I want to present the business model Canvas designed for a small imaginary company from Italy that produces celiac food, called “ Foodeliac ”. During the XXI century there was an increase of “free gluten” food for intolerant people to any kind of food containing wheat, a lot of grains (such as spelt, barley, oat, kamut) and derived. We know that a lot of different food are full of this primary substance, such as pasta, bread, chocolate and so on. It’s important, for people affected by “celiac disease”, to avoid totally these kind of food. These people have to follow a strict diet and buy only food without gluten, to prevent complications. The market of free gluten food is in expansion and, even if these kind of products have high costs, people affected by celiac disease must buy them for their health. However, most of the products with the stamp “gluten free” are not totally free. Anyway, a recent study has tentatively concluded that consumption of less than 10 mg of gluten per day is unlikely to cause histological abnormalities, while underlining the need for further investigation. Another problem is that a lot of companies that produce free gluten food, also produce products not gluten free, so the contamination becomes a real problem. In nature, there are a lot of products naturally gluten free such as fruits, legumes, milk, cheese, meat and fish. So it seems easy for a person who suffers from celiac disease to eat more or less any kind of food. But if we think about an Italian contest and, in general, the Mediterranean diet, we realize that the most consumed food are pasta, pizza and bread, all containing wheat.
So the business I present has the purpose to produce any kind of food (pizza, pasta, beer) only for people affected by celiac disease at reasonable costs also by exporting products around Europe, with particular attention focused on Mediterranean’s markets.
Below, the scheme of the Business Model Canvas applied to the small business “Foodeliac”.
We can analyze each part of the Canvas Model applied to “Foodeliac”. Starting from the right side, there is the “Customer segments”: for whom we are creating value and who are the most important customers? Of course, the most important customer for our business is every single person affected by celiac disease. Why? Because they need to follow a careful diet to preserve their health.
They can buy these products from another important customer segment: market, from the little one to the biggest supermarket chain. Our purpose is to cover the most part of the market to expand the brand also out our country. Also pubs and restaurant can offer a special menu based on our free gluten products for this kind of clientele.
We have to establish and maintain strong relationship with our customers, what we show in the “Customer relationships” segment. A long term relationship is the idea. In this way there is the continuous flux of products bought and sold by our customers and the possibility to widen the market is higher. In small realities, we can create a network to reach every single client by weekly e-mails to inform about news, new products launched on the market, the creation of points of sales, to make the customer conscious of the quality of our goods. In this way the customer is always up-to-date about everything. Last but not least, a good channel is the sponsorship in every single market that sell our goods. It’s possible to set-up info points to show the products and to make the customers able to try directly the food.
Now we can analyze the “Channels”, that is the way we reach our customers. A channel must be efficient, not expensive, accessible to all. The best way to complete this segment is Internet. Sure enough, the web, today, is the most powerful channel to reach people all over the world in a “click”. Everyone spend at least one hour per day in front of the PC. The creation of a engaging website can attract a lot of people and make they able to appreciate our company. Like internet, also the television is a strong mean of communication. So the advertisement is important to arrive at families and markets. We live in a globalized world, we live in technology, we are in contact everyday with the most important means of communication, so to focus the attention on the telematics system can put us on the same wavelength of modernity. Anyway, it is important not to underestimate the door to door delivery. Why? Because we have to think about every single situation, such as elderly people or disabled and not only. The door to door delivery is open to anyone who wishing to use the service.
Then, we have to consider the “Value propositions”, that is to say what value we do deliver to the customer. First of all, we want to give our customers the best food of the category. Our business is aimed at a specific goal: produce food for a specific category of people, so we have to do the best to reach this purpose. Another important target is to avoid contamination. As explained in the introduction, some of the business that produce free gluten food, produce at the same time products containing wheat and similar. We want to focus our attention exclusively on this kind of goods. This value proposition is closely connected to another: to preserve health. People affected by celiac disease know how important is to follow an accurate diet. And then, we want to offer our customers every kind of products, all free gluten, but without privation.
Introducing the accounting issues, we are in front of the “Revenue streams”, strictly concentrated on the way the customer can pay. There are various possibilities, two in particular:
One of the most important segment in the Business Model Canvas is that of the “Key activities”.
