William Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1564, possibly on 23 April, St George's day. His father was a yeoman. He married Anne Hathaway when he was 18 and she was 26. They had three children: Susanna, and the twins Judith and Hamnet. In 1584 he left Stratford, went to London. He was received into one of the acting companies, but his wit soon distinguished him, if not as a great actor, as an excellent playwriter. In 1593 He received this support from a young nobleman, the Earl of Southampton, Shakespeare became a shareholder and the main playwright of the most successful company of actors in London, the Lord Chamberlan’s man. He died in 1616. William Shakespeare works are divided into 4 periods: 1st Period -Henry VI PLAYS OF -Richard III EXPERIMENTATION -The comedy of errors -The taming of the Shrew -The two gentleman of Verona -Love’s Labours lost 2nd Period -Romeo and Juliet HISTORICAL PLAYS -A midsummer night’s dream AND GREAT - The merchant of Venice COMMEDIES - Much ado about nothing
3rd Period -Hamlet DARK PLAYS -Othello -Macbeth -King Lear -Antony e Cleopatra
First Act: The play opens with the news that an attempted invasion of Scotland by the Norwegians, has failed thanks to Macbeth's courage. While returning home from the battle, Macbeth and his friend Banquo meet three witches who greet Macbeth as "Thane of Cawdor' and say that he will become King of Scotland. The witches' prophecy begins to work on Macbeth's ambition. Macbeth invites Duncan, the King of Scotland, to his castle and writes a letter to his wife to inform her. She carries out a plan to kill Duncan. Second Act: Duncan is murdered by Macbeth and the blame is put on the king's servants sleeping outside his room. The king's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, leave Scotland. Macbeth is now on the throne. Third Act : Macbeth does not feel safe. He decides to kill Banquo. Fourth Act: The three witches warn Macbeth to beware of Macduff: this will lead to the murder of Macduff's wife and children. Fifth Act: This act opens with the sight of Lady Macbeth's madness; she walks in her sleep, trying to wash away Duncan's blood from her hands. Meanwhile Malcolm goes to Scotland an army. Macbeth is isolate because all the lords have allied with Malcolm. Macduff kills Macbeth. The play ends with Mact holding up Macbeth's head and proclaiming Malcolm King of Scotland.
Macbeth is the only Shakespearean play set in Scotland. The beginning of the play is characterised by fog and a thunderstorm. The action takes place first at Macbeth's castle in Inverness and later at the palace in Dunsinane.There is a contrast between the ideas of natural and unnatural, security and danger.
