The category of disorders that interest me the most in the DSM-5 is the mood disorders. They
interest me because I feel that they are some of the most common disorders in today’s society.
I believe in many scenarios these disorders are incorrectly diagnosed. In some instances, mood
disorders may be strongly influenced by uncontrollable real life events. For example, depression
is a something that I have experienced in my own family. My brother faced this when he was
forced to end his football career due to injury. This was a very dark period in his life because he
struggled with finding that motivation within himself to overcome these tough times. I feel that
myself and the rest of my immediate family members did our best to help him along the way.
When attempting to help someone dealing with a disorder like this it is difficult to find a
balance of trying to help them and giving them their own space. Ultimately, he overcame this
over a lengthy period of time and returned to his normal everyday life. I hope that this class
provides me with a solid foundation of knowledge about mental disorders that I may come into
contact with in my career as a physical therapist. Although, I am not planning a career
specifically in mental health, I think it is a physical therapist’s responsibility to improve the
overall health of their patient every time they are in contact with them.
