Chapter 5 - Application Software
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the function of application software
2. Discuss the position of the key categories of application software with examples of products
in each category.
3. Describe how software is created and produced.
Summary:
Application Software
- These are programs that help solve and meet user problems and needs directly. They are
designed to perform specific functions which make daily activities easier and facilitate the
performance of work efficiently and effectively.
Commercial software comes prepackaged and is available from software vendors. It
must be purchased.
Shareware are software developed and released as demonstration versions of their
commercial product. Each demonstration copy has an expiration date which gives the
user the ample time to evaluate and decide whether to purchase the product or not.
Open source software is created by generous programmers and released to the public
domain or free and for public use.
Categories of Application Software
Word-processing software use to create and edit documents such as research paper
and edit documents such as research papers, letters, and resumes.
Spreadsheet software enables you to do calculations and numerical analyses easily. It
enables you to calculate and manipulate numerical data easily with the use of build-in
formulas.
Presentation software are used to create dynamic slideshows.
Database software is basically a complex electronic filing system.
Personal Information Manager (PIM) Software these programs strive to replace the
management tools found on a traditional desk a calendar, address book, notepad and
to-do list.
Productivity Software Features
Whether you are working on a word processing document, spreadsheet, database or
slide presentation, you can make use of several tools to increase your efficiency.

Software suites is a group of software suite is a group of software programs that have
been bundled as a package.
Personal Financial software it enables you to prepare your state and federal taxes on
your own rather than having to hire a professional.
Digital Media Editing software - it enables you to edit photographs and other images.
Digital Audio software includes tools that make editing your audio files as easy as
editing your text files.
Media Management software allows you to organize audio and video files so that you
can sort, filter and search your music collection by artist, album or category.
Gaming Software is designed to provide users with thrills, chills and all-out fun.
Computer games make up the vast majority of entertainment software.

Large Business Software  Project Management Software – helps project managers easily create and modify scheduling charts which help managers plan and track specific tasks and coordinate personnel resources.  Customer Relationship Management Software – stores sales and client-contact information in one central database.  Enterprise Resource Planning Systems – are important to businesses as they consolidate multiple systems into one and improve coordination of these business areas across multiple department.  Online mapping services – are now more popular than the more traditional mapping software programs because they are easily accessible with any Internet connection and are updated more frequently.  Computer-aided design (CAD) – programs are a form of 3D modeling that engineers use to create automated designs, technical drawings, and model visualizations.   • It is a method used by the software industry to design, produce and test high-quality software. The goal of the SDLC is to deliver high-quality software that meets or exceeds customer expectations, to be completed within timeframes and cost estimates.
