Watch and analyze the persuasive speech provided Authors: Yosef Hermosa Lecturers : Audronė Daubarienė Saulė Petronienė Introduction

I chose Ric Elias' speech, 3 things I learned while my plane crashed. I thought it was a very interesting speech and to be honest most of the times I hear or see a speech I get bored very quickly, but this speech was different, from the beginning Ric Elias caught me with his story and what I think is very important is that throughout the speech he makes some jokes that keep the audience awake and very attentive. I find it impressive the way in which few presenters manage the audience and can present the introduction, the ending and the conclusion of the story with a little humor and mystery. In this work I will analyze very carefully and in depth the speech of Ric Elias. INSTRUCTIONS

  • Watch the persuasive speech provided, read the transcript.
    • Analyze the speech in terms of the following aspects of persuasive speaking:  Characteristics First, I will analyze the characteristics that a speech presenter should have. The first characteristic is to make a choice and ask for a commitment from the audience. The commitment Ric Elias asks for from the audience begins at the beginning of the speech when he puts the audience in the picture of an event he experienced. The second characteristic is to focus on good reasons and responsible knowledge, Ric Elias in his speech gives many reasons for the audience to believe in his words and also catches people's attention because he does it in a nice and funny way, and when talking about responsible knowledge I can say that he gives his experience, in the speech Ric Elias tells a real and chilling experience and so he comes to three life tips he learned from that experience. The third characteristic is to require more commitment from the audience, this characteristic Ric Elias uses because at the beginning of the speech he asks the audience to imagine the experience he had, he puts the audience in his shoes so he can manipulate them and give them three tips he learned that day.The next feature is to consider the interests of the audience in a sensitive way, the presenter handles this feature very well because he is doing his speech on the TED platform and most people are adults or seniors, the way he tells the story and the advice he gives to the audience in a very kind and sensitive way. The fourth characteristic is to trust more in the emotional involvement and the presenter uses this characteristic very well since he reaches the audience in an emotional way, a part that I liked very much and it seemed to me that it reached me emotionally was when the presenter spoke about you have to be a good father or mother, you have to be the best father so that the children are good people with values, and the last characteristic is to carry a heavier ethical load, this characteristic he uses very well since he shows us positive advice to change our for good, he says that when I hear the pilot of the airplane say prepare for impact he said he doesn't regret anything and beyond being afraid of death he thought about all the positive things he did and created those three pieces of advice that he now uses to improve his life in every aspect.

live what the presenter lived to change our way of life, to change the negative energies for the positive ones.  Speech design The speech design that the presenter uses is the contrast of comparison because he uses the variation of analogy to frame the dramatic calls to action and change of attitude, he tells us his dramatic story and how it was the change and the solution to the problems he had before the accident.  The linguistic devices employed by the speaker and the purpose of using those devices. The presenter uses these linguistic devices First, Ric Flias forms the perceptions of the audience since the accident he had could happen to anyone of us and he also tells us about the experiences he lived before the crash and after the crash, then we say that the presenter puts himself in the shoes of the audience and the audience puts on the presenter's shoes. About the feelings of the listeners he enters into this area of the feelings of the audience because we all identify with the experiences he lived, he says that we have to eliminate the bad energy, also he says that we have to stop postponing the ones we have to do and also he says that we have to be better parents, to be better people.

 What visual aids were used and how they helped to support the speech

The presenter does not use visual aids.
