Biochemistry Crash Course Videos (Crash Course)
Video #1
โ— Carbon. Contains 6 protons and 6 neutrons
โ— Atomic weight of 12
โ— Carbon is the foundation of biology
โ— Forms covalent bonds
โ— Electrons shared equally b/w bond โ†’ non polar
โ— Non equal, slight (+) and (-) charges โ†’ polar
โ— Ionic bond: donate/ accept electrons, a charged ion forms
โ— Halogen โ†’ needs 1 more electron for octet (Cl)
โ— Alkalineโ†’ only has 1 electron in octet (Na)
โ— Become Na+ and Cl- after donation of electron โ†’ ionic bond formation creates salt
Video #2
โ— H2O uses a covalent bond: each hydrogen shares an electron with oxygen. It is thus a polar
molecule.
โ— All water molecules are attracted to each other due to this polarity โ€“ these are hydrogen bonds
(between the positive and negative poles of different molecules)
โ— Hydrogen bonds in water results in high cohesion, and thus high surface tension.
โ— Cohesion is the attraction between two like things (e.g. two water molecules).
โ— Water has the highest cohesion of any non-metallic liquid.
โ— Adhesion is the attraction between two unlike things (e.g. water and glass).
โ— Capillary action is water defying gravity.
โ— Water is the greatest solvents (due to its polarity).
โ— Hydrophilic molecules are polar โ€“ their polarity is stronger than the cohesive forces of water.
โ— Hydrophobic molecules cannot break the cohesive forces of water because they are non-polar.
โ— Solid water is less dense than liquid water due to hydrogen bonds forming crystalline structures
that space molecules apart more easily (when frozen).
โ— Water has a very high heat capacity โ€“ it is good at holding on to heat, thus oceans regulate climate
and temperature of planets.
Video #3
โ— William Prout discovered that our stomachs have hydrochloric acid and discovered the chemical
composition of urea. Also discovered food is divided into carbs, fats, and proteins
โ— Carbohydrates are the source of all energy
โ— Carbs are made of sugars with the simplest being monosaccharides
โ— Glucose, a monosaccharide, number 1 sugar that comes from the sun
โ— Fructose, same chemical as glucose, but arranged differently, and is sweeter
โ— Disaccharides are two monosaccharides put together
โ— Sucrose, fructose and glucose connected, is a disaccharide joined by a covalent bond
โ— Polysaccharides are thousands of simple sugar units
โ— Cellulose is a bunch of glucose molecules
โ— Bread is made of starch and amylase

Video # โ— William Prout discovered that our stomachs have hydrochloric acid and discovered the chemical composition of urea. โ— Our bodies store carbs in form of glycogen in our muscle until we need to use them โ— We store our energy long term through fat aka lipids โ— Lipids are non polar and canโ€™t dissolve in water โ— Fats are made of glycerol and fatty acids โ— Saturated fats donโ€™t have double bonds, while unsaturated fats do โ— Trans fat do not exist in nature and are unsaturated and bad for the body โ— Omega 3 fats, unsaturated, are essential but we need to eat them in order to get them โ— Phospholipids form cell membrane walls to keep bad stuff out and good stuff in โ— Phospholipids are one end polar and one end non polar โ— Steroids, a phospholipid made of 4 carbon rings, are used to make cholesterol โ— Proteins of made of 20 amino acids which do everything for the body โ— Nitrogen can only be gotten into our bodies from food, via foods high in protein โ— Polypeptides are formed by long chains of amino acids โ— The 9 essential amino acids, which are bodies canโ€™t make on their own, are histidine, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, and valine

Video # โ— Animal cell โ— Eukaryotic cells, with membrane ,organelles and nucleus containing DNA that calls the shots โ— Animal, plants, fungi and protist โ— Flexible and squishy membranes as opposed to plants, allowing the creation of cell, organs and tissue types โ— Cell is like a city, On the surface: โ— Microtubials: made of long protein fibers: Cilia (tiny arms like in lungs and throat pushing the mucus up) and Flagella (whip-like tail like in sperms), Protozoans, move with Microtubials instead of muscle tissue โ— Membrane: Selective permeability: monitoring coming in and out like boarders โ— Inside: โ— Cytoplasm: water+nutrients โ— Cytoskeleton: scaffolding made of protein strands, Centrosomes: infrastructures โ— Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER): network of membranes like a highway system โ— The smoother parts of ER are like factories: containing enzymes (proteins) producing lipids, detoxifying substances by adding carboxyl to make them soluble in water, storing ions like Sodium used for energy โ— The rougher parts of ER have Ribosomes attached to them: Synthesis and packaging of proteins โ— Ribosomes: float freely, assemble amino acids into Polypeptides pushing the protein chain into ER where it's bitten off and sent to Golgi Apparatus โ— Golgi: made of membranous layers: the post office for packaging proteins, cutting them into hormones, combining them with Carbs to make molecules โ— Vesicles: the packages with Phospholipid walls โ— Lysosome: waste treatment and recycling, sacks containing enzymes breaking down cell waste into building material โ— Mitochondria: the power plant where respiration takes place, fuels converted to Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) which is the currency
