BIO121-L04 name: Mackenna Weber
Lab 1-F23: Measurements and Data Analysis.
Q1: How was the climate orbiter destroyed, and what was the cause? (2 pts)
The space craft was thrown so off course that it flew too deeply into the Martian
atmosphere and was destroyed when it entered its initial orbit. This was due to a
miscommunication between NASA and JPL because the craft was sent off with
the wrong units.
Q2: What lessons does this teach us about the importance of units of measurement? (2 pts)
This teaches us that we must include the unit we are using when translating data.
Q3: How do units of measure relate to communication and collaborative research? (2 pts)
Units of measure relate to communication and collaborative research because a
huge part of research is data and without the correct unit measurements, we lose
the right form of communication.
Q4: Restate as a testable null hypothesis (2 pts):
There is no correlation between the tree trunk diameter and the tree crown
diameter.
Q5: Now state the Alternate Hypothesis (2 pts):
There is a correlation between the tree trunk diameter and the tree crown
diameter.
Q6: Report average trunk diameters and crown widths (2 pts):
Q7: Provide your Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. What does this alone indicate? (2
pts):

(2 pts) The space craft was thrown so off course that it flew too deeply into the Martian atmosphere and was destroyed when it entered its initial orbit. This was due to a miscommunication between NASA and JPL because the craft was sent off with the wrong units. Q2: What lessons does this teach us about the importance of units of measurement? (2 pts) Units of measure relate to communication and collaborative research because a huge part of research is data and without the correct unit measurements, we lose the right form of communication. Q4: Restate as a testable null hypothesis (2 pts): There is no correlation between the tree trunk diameter and the tree crown diameter. Q5: Now state the Alternate Hypothesis (2 pts): There is a correlation between the tree trunk diameter and the tree crown diameter. Q6: Report average trunk diameters and crown widths (2 pts):

Q7: Provide your Pearson's Correlation Coefficient. What does this alone indicate? (

pts):

Our Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient was .77, this indicates we can reject the null and support the hypothesis that there is a correlation between tree trunk diameter and tree crown diameter. Q8: Paste a screenshot of your scatter plot in the space below: (3 pts)

Q9: Describe how you could redesign this experiment to more effectively

assess the relationship between tree age and crown diameters. What do

you think is a potential problem with the measurement you performed

today? (3 pts)

To assess the relationship more effectively between tree age and crown diameters we could take more data from different trees which could allow us to have a more accurate correlation coefficient. I think a potential problem with the measurements is that we did not measure in the same spot on every tree so that could potentially be a problem.
