Experiment # Boiling Point Determination – Microscale Name: Kate D. Date: February 17th,^2015

Object: To determine the melting point of a pure substance using micro boiling point determination methods. Theory: The boiling point of a substance is the temperature at which the vapour pressure in the liquid is equal or at equilibrium with the external vapour pressure (atmospheric pressure). The micro scale technique has two different setups and requires less sample than the distillation method. Table of Physical Constants: Name of Compound Formula Boiling Point (ºC) Methylene Chloride CH 2 Cl 2 39. Isopropyl Alcohol

Unknown A 55 56 Acetone – 56 -0. Sample Calculations: Boiling Point = bp at 760 mmHg - 10, 000 ( 273 at 760 mmHg)(760- p) Ex. Methylene chloride’s bp = 37ºC at 747 mmHg. 37 = 10000 x  ( 273  x )( 760  747 ) x = 37.31 ºC correction = 0.31 ºC Discussion: The unknown sample was found to be Acetone based on the boiling points found with Setup A and B. The boiling point of Methylene chloride was corrected for
