GEED 20143 BUSINESS LOGIC
Give 10 examples of fallacious arguments. Explain why it considered as such and resolve how
can it be fixed.
1. Gavin walks through a town for the first time and sees 12 people, all of them are children. He
then concludes that all the town’s residents are children.
-This argument is fails to explore all of the data surrounding the topic and attempts to
suggest a conclusion based on this limited knowledge. Visiting a town and only saw 12
children makes him conclude that the residents in the town are all children. It is
suggested to make sure that using the sample size to make a generalization is
representative of the whole population and Gavin should ensure that the information he
had is enough before making a conclusion.
2. Bea: We should wait more for Ms. Laiza to submit her assigned report before starting our
project.
Lea: Its taking her too long. Why don’t we just fire her up?
-This argument is a sample of Straw Man where Lea attacked the stance that is not
relevant to what Bea had discussed on waiting for the report of Ms. Laiza. To solve this,
Bea should can put Lea on the defensive by asking her to justify why she believe that
the distorted stance which firing Ms. Laiza is the same as the one Bea originally
proposed to wait for the report. With that, Lea will be forced to admit that her argument
was invalid.
3. “Haity said that we should increase the federal spending on research and development. She’s
a fascist, so we shouldn’t listen to what she had to say about our research and development”,
Peter stated.
-This argument is fallacious since the Peter dismissed an argument because Haity who
made that argument doesn’t appear to have sufficient formal credentials in the relevant
field. To solve this, instead of focusing on the personal attack, they should point out with
the original discussion which is increasing the federal spending for their research and
development. It is better to not become defensive when doing this, and be offensive
instead and ask Peter to justify why his personal attack to Haity is relevant to the
discussion.

  1. “Well, there’s been a lot of criticism of the quality of our recent product. In response, we should make a sale, so the customers can buy more at a lower cost” -This is a red herring fallacy where the speaker presets irrelevant information in an attempt to distract others from a topic that’s being discussed, often to avoid the main topic. Knowing that their product has a lot of criticism, they decided to distract the customers by making a sale and purchase more of their product. 5.Employer: So why should we hire you for this job? Ms. Bartolay: Because if you don’t hire me then I’ll be out on the street, and I’ll have to live in a cardboard box. You don’t want me to be homeless do you? -This argument shows an appeal to emotion. When the employer asked Ms. Bartolay a question regarding her job application, she answered by relying primarily on her intuitive, emotional response to the interview rather than on a logical, fact-based reasoning process. In this case, the employer can either disregard Ms. Bartolay’s application since she didn’t respond to the interview correctly or ask her again by pointing out that her argument was fallacious.
  2. Gael went to five restaurants in Thailand and didn’t like the food. There are no good restaurants in Thailand. -The statement is very fallacious because having visited five restaurants is not enough to say that all restaurants in Thailand are not good. Making this kind of generalization is very wrong and dangerous for it leads to misinformation. It is very important to be aware of the correct process before arriving to conclusions.
  3. The girl and boy scouts should be allowed to wear their uniform to school every Friday because that’s the way we have always done it.
    • This argument is logical fallacious in which something is accepted as true or better because it's the "way it's always been done." There is no evidence that a specific belief or activity actually is better. It is just believed to be better because it is the traditional belief. Thus, this matter should be discussed among the people involved to find a solution.
