Understanding Nursing Quality Indicators and Advancing Quality Patient Care, Thesis of Cost Accounting

Nursing quality indicators and their importance in improving patient care outcomes. It also explores how the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators was established and how it collects data to support quality improvement activities. The document emphasizes the role of nurses in delivering patient-centered care and how nursing quality indicators can help identify issues that interfere with optimal care delivery. The use of electronic health systems and informatics programs is also discussed.

Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1
A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators
Nursing-quality indicators are measurable items that reflect the quality of care provided
and demonstrate the degree to which desired clinical outcomes are accomplished (Jacobs, 2017).
The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators describes that nursing quality indicators
were professionally compiled to focus on important patient centered aspects within nursing with
aims to improve the quality of patient care and patient outcomes by assessment and evaluation.
Today’s healthcare environment is demanding for nurses and the critical shortage of nursing staff
can lead to a detrimental effect on the care received by patients. Nursing-sensitive indicators
identify structures of care and care processes, both of which in turn influence care outcomes
(Montalvo, 2007).
In the case scenario of Mr. J, utilizing nursing-quality indicators would allow the nurses
to focus their practice to meet the indicated quality improvements relative to patient centered
care. Utilizing the most recent scientific based knowledge and upholding the ten principles
identified by the Institute of Medicine to guide initiative improvements, the results of Mr. J’s
care could have dramatically differed from the results rendered.
Patient-centered care focuses on delivering care that is based on the patient’s preferences,
needs and values in a respective and timely manner. Nurses are at the forefront in healthcare and

Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1 Western Governors University Organizational Systems and Quality Leadership Task 1 A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators Nursing-quality indicators are measurable items that reflect the quality of care provided and demonstrate the degree to which desired clinical outcomes are accomplished (Jacobs, 2017). The National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators describes that nursing quality indicators were professionally compiled to focus on important patient centered aspects within nursing with aims to improve the quality of patient care and patient outcomes by assessment and evaluation. Today’s healthcare environment is demanding for nurses and the critical shortage of nursing staff can lead to a detrimental effect on the care received by patients. Nursing-sensitive indicators identify structures of care and care processes, both of which in turn influence care outcomes (Montalvo, 2007). In the case scenario of Mr. J, utilizing nursing-quality indicators would allow the nurses to focus their practice to meet the indicated quality improvements relative to patient centered care. Utilizing the most recent scientific based knowledge and upholding the ten principles identified by the Institute of Medicine to guide initiative improvements, the results of Mr. J’s care could have dramatically differed from the results rendered. Patient-centered care focuses on delivering care that is based on the patient’s preferences, needs and values in a respective and timely manner. Nurses are at the forefront in healthcare and

greatly influence the safety, quality and delivery of patient-centered care. The application of nursing-quality indicators could have identified issues that interfered with delivering optimal patient care. Nursing staff ratios, nursing experience and level of education, and nurse and patient satisfaction are factors that affect nursing quality indicators. Most hospital-based systems have implemented a computerized electronic health system. Imbedded within the electronic health system are informatic programs that have process indicators such as a restraint assessment tool for the nursing staff to utilize. The assessment tool would have indicated whether Mr. J met the criteria to ascertain whether a continuation of the restraints was either met or not. In addition, a pressure injury assessment tool should have automatically been merged together with the restraint assessment tool to direct appropriate actions to help care for the patient such as a turning schedule and toileting schedule. Utilizing both of these tools would guide the nurse in best practice. Furthermore, a physician’s order would have been necessary to approve use of restraints and with the aid of an electronic health system would alert the nurse and provider to reassess the patient’s condition for continuation of the use of restraints. B. Advancing Quality Patient Care The governing body of the American Nurses Association (ANA) established the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) in 1998 as part of the ANA’s safety and quality initiative. This national database program collects designated indicators that strongly affect patient clinical outcomes for two major purposes: (1) to provide comparative data to health care organizations to support QI activities and (2) to develop national data to better understand the link between nurse staffing and patient outcomes (Jacobs, 2017). The three components in which the ANA’s data of specific nursing-quality indicators could advance quality patient care

patients, a dietary preference card could be briefly reviewed with the patient to ensure patient preferences are met. Based on the scenario, Mr. J’s mild dementia did not inhibit his ability to communicate with his daughter upon her arrival, much less the staff. In addition, the nursing care supervisor could recruit the assistance of guest services. Guest services is a program that offers a patient’s family members a place to stay for a discounted fee in order for family to stay in close proximity to the patient during their hospitalization. This specific measure would help to rebuild the family’s confidence in the nursing staff’s ability to take care of their family member. Finally, the nursing supervisor could recruit assistance from the administrator involved in the scenario. The administrator has the ability to reach out to the neighboring hospital that many Jewish community members seek care. Seeking information and guidance from Jewish community members could offer an explanation as to why many Jewish community members choose to seek care at a facility in a larger city. The comparative data provided by the NDNQI could reveal that patient satisfaction has a higher score at this other facility. References Jacob, B.C.S. R. (2017).
