C 572 Classroom Management, Engagement, and Motivation Task 1 A. Explain how one student’s behavior affects the learning environment, including how that behavior influences his or her own learning, the learning of others, and the teacher instructions. Bridgett shows lack of confidence in her learning abilities. With the need for constant reassurance and conformation she is distracting the teacher from whole group lessons. When Bridgett is reinforced with the teacher’s attention she is engaging in learned helplessness. She is relying in the teacher versus her own abilities. The teacher would be lessening her focus on the lesson to pause for reassurance to Bridgett thus affecting the entire learning environment and fellow students learning. This pause in teaching would open opportunity for other students and behavioral issues such as wondering room, anger from constant change in routine, and lack of focus. B. Describe a possible trigger (i.e., antecedent) or reason for the student’s behavior. The antecedent for Bridgett’s behavior is whole group lessons and conformation she is correctly doing the work. The function of her behavior is attention seeking and the teacher is reinforcing the behavior with the attention Bridgett is seeking. Bridgett will continue to interrupt and seek attention if the teacher is reinforcing it. C. Describe an instructional intervention (ways you would change the instruction, lesson or assignment for a student, this is different than behavioral interventions) specific to the student that could be used to address the student’s behavior or trigger. An instructional intervention I would use for Bridgett is to provide scheduled attention breaks to reduce the need for attention seeking behaviors during whole group lessons. I would increase praise for appropriate classroom behaviors such as waiting for appropriate time to raise hand and speak or doing her work independently. Nonpreferred behaviors would be not to reinforced such as calling out and not waiting the appropriate amount of time to request attention. D-D1. Describe a way to incorporate a type of technology to enhance your teaching, with a student from either scenario as a target for the technology. Explain how or why the technology identified will enhance your teaching.
Information is given that Sarah and a few other students are part of a photography and movie making club. This information would suggest they are interested in technology. I would incorporate technology into this classroom with the use of computers. I would use a program such as Kahoot after whole group lessons to do an informal assessment of information retained. Actively engaging in larger group activities such as Kahoot allows for structured time while engaging the entire classroom. For individual lessons I would incorporate computers by allowing students to record themselves speaking about the information that was being taught and allow them to present it to the class. This will foster independence in Sarah and many others and decrease the wondering behaviors previously seen in the classroom. E-E1. Describe a way to incorporate a different type of technology to enhance learning, with a different student from either scenario as a target for the technology. Explain how or why the technology identified will enhance the learning for that student. Walden is interested in the Solar System so a program such as Google Sky would be more effective in leaning then traditional pencil and paper for this type of lesson. Walden and other students can use their computers and explore the solar system and seek information that was prepared in question form by the teacher. F-F1. Describe a way to incorporate a different type of technology to enhance engagement, with a different student from either scenario as a target for the technology. Explain how or why the technology identified will enhance the engagement of that student. Liz is a student who likes to wonder the classroom. Wondering the room typically means she is not engaged in the lesson and could be potentially bored. A way to enhance engagement using technology would be to add a website called Kahoot into the lesson plan. Kahoot is an individual or group-based platform that is a competitive fun site that allows for structured yet relaxed learning. Liz would benefit from this type of technology learning because it is fast paced and requires engagement to answer questions correctly to earn points. G-G1. Describe a way to incorporate a different type of technology (or software) to enhance motivation, with a different student from either scenario as a target for the technology. Explain how or why the technology identified will enhance the motivation of that student.
