Q1 A beam has cross sectional details in mm shown in Fig.Q1.

(i) Determine the second moments of area Ixx and Iyy. (10 marks) (ii) If the beam is positioned to bend about the X-X axis and if the maximum permissible stress is 165N/mm^2 in compression and tension determine the moment of resistance of the section. (5 marks) (iii) What is safe uniform load that the beam will carry over a 6 m span? (10 marks)

Q4 A composite beam consists of a timber section 120mm wide and 280mm deep with a 12mm thick steel plate securely fixed to the bottom face. Calculate the max stress in both timber and steel if the section is subjected to a sagging moment of 15kNm. Stresses to be found by (a) Transforming the section into an all timber section (13 marks) (b) Transforming the section into an all steel section. (12 marks) Etimber=12kN/mm2 Esteel=200kN/mm

Q5 A 250mm wide simply supported concrete beam with a span of 4m has six reinforcing bars of 25mm diameter each located at a depth of 400mm from the top of the beam.

(a) If the beam carries a uniformly distributed load of 20kN/m including self weight determine the maximum stress in both the concrete and the steel assuming that the modular ratio as 15. (13 marks)

(b) If the beam is subject to a load of 30kN at its centre determine the induced stresses in the steel and concrete. (12 marks)
