Learning Competency with Code TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-IIa-j- 30 3.1 Install Operating System (OS) in accordance with established installation procedures and to comply with end-user requirements II. Background Information for Learners What is an Operating System? An operating system the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as scheduling tasks, executing applications, and controlling peripherals. The operating system can be considered as core software component of the computer. It performs many functions and an interface between your computer hardware using what is referred to as "drivers", and the programs installed in your computer. After assembling your computer, you cannot use it immediately. When you boot your computer, the first thing that executes in your hardware is the one installed in the CMOS (complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor) which is the BIOS (Basic Input Output System). The BIOS job is to:
- Check the custom CMOS Setup
- Load interrupt handlers and device managers
- Initialize registers and power management
- Perform the power-on self-test (POST)
- Display system settings
- Determine which devices are bootable
- Initiate the bootstrap sequence More on this link (https://computer.howstuffworks.com/bios1.htm) Without the operating system, the computer could not open any games or office programs like Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint. The user cannot do anything useful with the computer without the operating system. Look at the diagram below.

Placement of Operating System Windows Operating System Microsoft Windows, also called Windows and Windows OS, computer operating system (OS) developed by Microsoft Corporation to run personal computers (PCs). Featuring the first graphical user interface (GUI) for IBM- compatible PCs, the Windows OS soon dominated the PC market. Approximately 90 percent of PCs run some version of Windows. The first version of Windows, released in 1985, was simply a GUI offered as an extension of Microsoft’s existing disk operating system, or MS-DOS. Based in part on licensed concepts that Apple Inc. had used for its Macintosh System Software, Windows for the first time allowed DOS users to visually navigate a virtual desktop, opening graphical “windows” displaying the contents of electronic folders and files with the click of a mouse button, rather than typing commands and directory paths at a text prompt. Subsequent versions introduced greater functionality, including native Windows File Manager, Program Manager, and Print Manager programs, and a more dynamic interface. Microsoft also developed specialized Windows packages, including the networkable Windows for Workgroups and the high-powered Windows NT, aimed at businesses. The 1995 consumer release Windows 95 fully integrated Windows and DOS and offered built-in Internet support, including the World Wide Web browser Internet Explorer. With the 2001 release of Windows XP, Microsoft united its various Windows packages under a single banner, offering multiple editions for consumers, businesses, multimedia developers, and others. Windows XP abandoned the long-used Windows 95 kernel (core software code) for a more powerful code base and offered a more practical interface and improved application and memory management. The highly successful XP standard was succeeded in late 2006 by Windows Vista, which experienced a troubled rollout and met with considerable marketplace resistance, quickly acquiring a reputation for being a large, slow, and resource-consuming system. - Upgrade (In-place upgrade) – This alternative replaces your present variant of Windows with Windows 7, and keeps your records, settings, and projects set up on your PC.
- Custom ("fresh" installation) – This choice replaces your present version of Windows with Windows 7, yet does not keep your records, settings, and programs. It is occasionally referred to a bare metal installation for that reason. As usual, a new installation is much better, and it is strongly suggested using that method. Regardless of whether you have a current Windows XP/Vista OS on your PC, is prescribe that you format it and install a new copy of the OS.
Installation Procedures for Windows 7
(Clean Install from Bootable USB Installer) a. Insert Windows 7 USB Installer you previously created and Power ON your PC. b. Enter your PC's BIOS. And this is all because of the demand of the users for better application software experience. The Windows 7 is known to be easy to use, works as how the user intends to use it. Some of the cybercafes still use Windows 7 as it is easy to troubleshoot and still meets the minimum specification of the current games. However, in January 14, 2020, the user must upgrade to Windows 10 because Microsoft will be discontinuing all technical support, software updates, security updates, and any other fixes after that date. Most of the windows users have opted to upgrade due to the latest OS, and some they might need help from those who are knowledgeable in computer software manipulation.
