i. Sinibaldo de Mas was a Spanish diplomat who reported to the Spanish government about the conditions of the Philippine islands. After an official visit in 1841, he concluded his report by expressing his personal conviction: The Spaniards, crossing new and remote seas, extended their domain of geography by discovering the Philippine Islands. They found anarchy and despotism there, and established order and justice. They encountered slavery and destroyed it and imposed political equality. They ruled their inhabitant with laws, and just laws. They Christianized them, civilized them, and defended them from the Chinese, from the Moro pirates and from the European aggressors: they spent much gold on them, and then they give them liberty. Task: Re-interpret and re-write this primary account from the Filipino point of view Sinibaldo de Mas was the Spanish diplomat during the 19th century. He was also an adventurer, poet and photographer that introduced photography to the Philippines in
philipines. Instead of saying that they all solved the problem in the Philippines, they should rather say that they did bring these problems to the Filipinos. The anarchy, despotism, slavery and unjust laws, they all are the ones who’s responsible for it. They are the one who exercise these kinds of negative works to Filipinos. ii. ASSESSMENT OF THE PRESENT AND PAST CHANGES Identify contemporary practices and traditions in Philippine society and compare it to the observations discussed in the primary accounts of Juan de Plasencia and Antonio Pigafetta. Politics and Religion One of the major contributions of Spanish to us is Catholicism. Spain introduced Catholic dogma and worship, a highly centralised government, bureaucracy and Roman law. The Philippines was divided into provinces composed of clustered villages, towns and cities. Friars from various religious orders kept watch. Ironically, its Catholic faith was always far from pure. Though Spain’s missionaries eradicated overt practices of animism, traditional beliefs in spirits and magic survived. However before that, Filipinos do not have a common religion. Due to our country having separated islands, most of the early tribes have different native religions. In today’s era Philippines has now different religion existing but still catholism is one of the biggest religion existing in the world but in todays era catholism is being exercise in pure and clear manner unlike in the times of Spanish colonization. Social The time that the Philippines was under Spanish rule makes up a major part of their history. Spain had control of the Philippines for more than 300 years, so it’s no surprise that there are many Filipino customs, traditions, and cultural norms that can be traced back to the Spanish. They left their mark probably more so than any other foreign nation to which the Philippines was subjected. One very interesting thing that the Spanish changed in our social about the Philippines was the use of native last
Philippines today is a democratic country where in the power of the state is in the hands of its citizens. Different rights have been establish and there are many government and non- government institution who are maining these right when injusticeness happens contrary on the times where Philippines is under the colonization of different country especially the spain wherein they ruled 333 years here in our country has no official government, although there is existing leadership such as “datu”, “raja” or “pangolo” which rules barangay even though it is informal, folk-sustained, uncentralised, without specific agencies, was no distinction between the family and the community and the leaders authority was based on kinship, subservience, deference and dependence we can see that we have existing government but not the official one. Without the official government the Spanish take advantage of use filipinos and ruled us with their own way of ruling. We Filipinos are deprived of our rights, the power of the government is not in our hands and especially we don’t unite as one which I think is the biggest problem of the many downfalls of different revolts we did. Education Education in today’s era are free and high quality. It’s in your own accordance ion what you want to take and what you want to be in the future. You can learn anything you want and any language you want without you being stop because you have your rights in free education unlike in the time of colonization in the Philippines where in education is not free and Filipinos are deprive of it especially those who are in the lower class and are called indios, they don’t have the privileged to study languages they like only those who belong to higher class in the society which are called illustrators. Isn’t it grateful for us in todays era that we have the freedom to learn anything we want yet there are some people who are not thankful that they can exercise their right to have free education and learn. Because of lack of education in the time of colonization filipnos who are willing to take part of the revolts are being discouraged because of this lacking. Eventhough they want, they cant. I think the very root cause of the colonization and failed revolts are the lack of education because reformist and revolutionaries are outnumbered because others are being discouraged. Social Media
In todays era, social media are very relevant and are very used because it is now our medium of communication and medium of education per se, unlike in the time of colonization where in there medium of communication are newpapers, letters and oral communication which I think is very hard for the revolutionaries and reformist to give information about their plan and execution. Mental and Health Mental and health in today’s era are very important; people are always taking care of themselves with the help of many medicines being discovered. People are very conscious of their health unlike in the era of philipines colonization their health is not that important and being disregard by the colonizers. There are also no lot of medicines being discovered and lot of people die if such pandemic happens. They are being taking advantage because of the colonizers, their health is not their priority. Mental health is also not priority their priority is their lives and their freedom from the abusive colonizers. They do not identify mental health issues and it isn’t a serious problem to them. Gender Issues Gender issues are being highlights in todays era, being free to choice whom you want to love is free unlike in the past where phillipines are not yet free from colonizers gender issues is not a thing to think. They hide their identity and their feelings because is it not their priority and no one are prioritizing it. No one talks about gender issueses. Gender issues in their time are not yet acknowledged by the government unlike us in todays era.
