Q1. (a) What stages are involved in preparing the site before digging the foundations? (9 Marks)

(b) What is the first layer to be excavated, how much of it should be removed and why? (7 Marks)

(c) When marking out the site, how does the builder mark out right angles? Make a sketch. (9 Marks)

Q2. Name and sketch three types of foundations, and state where each type would be used. (Soil type, bearing capacity) (25 Marks)

Q3. Sketch a detailed and annotated section through a traditional strip foundation and a ground supported concrete floor with a radon membrane, for a domestic building. Your sketch should include details of the external cavity wall to above finished floor level. (25 Marks)

Q4. (a) Sketch a detailed and annotated vertical section through a pressed metal lintel incorporated in the head of a window opening (ope) in a cavity wall of a domestic building. The external leaf of the cavity wall is constructed of facing bricks; the internal leaf is constructed of concrete blocks. (10 Marks)

(b) Sketch a detailed and annotated vertical section through pre-stressed composite lintels incorporated in the head of a window opening (ope) in a cavity wall of a domestic building. The internal and external leaf of the cavity wall is constructed of concrete blocks. (10 Marks)

(c) What is the purpose of a non-composite lintel? (5 Marks)

Q5. (a) Sketch an annotated cross section of a Cold and Warm deck type of Flat Roofs in a domestic building. (12 Marks)

(b) Discuss briefly the advantages a Warm deck flat roof has over a Cold deck flat roof. (8 Marks)

(c) What is the recommended fall for a flat roof and how is the fall achieved? (5 Marks)
