Chapter 11 Question 5 E-Procurement and E-Fulfillment Daniel Lennon Liberty University BMIS 510 October 30, 2014
Running head: Chapter 11 question 5 E-PROCUREMENT AND E-FULFILLMENT 1
Chapter 11 Question 5 E-Procurement and E-Fulfillment Introduction Supply chain uses both procurement and fulfillment to fulfill needs for businesses and consumers alike. When procurement and fulfillment are used online they are called e- procurement and e-fulfillment. E-procurement is the sale of items and services through the internet. This can be done to businesses, governments, or directly to the consumer. E-fulfillment is when an item, information, or service is received from a transaction through the Internet. This is can include e-books, digital games, orders, and other information online. Both processes are essential in today’s e-commerce (Motiwalla, and Thompson, 2012).
Discussion Comments These business activities of e-procurement and e-fulfillment are both part of the supply chain and accessed through the Internet. Both of them can be used by businesses and customers. The difference between e-procurement and e-fulfillment is that e-procurement is the action of ordering from a business; while e-fulfillment is the action of receiving items from a business. E- procurement begins the process of a transaction, while e-fulfillment finishes it. Muffatoo, and Payaro (2004) mention, “Type of product must be identified in procurement, this is not the case in fulfillment since it deals with finished products during and after shipment” (p.342). E- procurement items do not necessarily mean finished goods, as in a business or consumer can order raw materials from a supplier. While, with e-fulfillment usually deals with the finished item such as a whole product like e-book. But, e-fulfillment can also be orders or information being received which would be service end in fulfillment. Both processes have similarities, but their functions are completely different from one another.
