EMILIE WAPNICK
WHY SOME OF US DON’T HAVE ONE TRUE CALLING
Why people are multipotentiallites?
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Are you one?
Emilie Wapnick, who although resists labels, would describe herself as a coach, speaker, artists, writer, and
entrepreneur, delivered a TED talk entitled, “Why Some of Us Don’t Have One True Calling” in October 2015.
Wapnick opens up the talk by asking audience members to raise their hand if they have ever been asked the
question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Many hands immediately raise in the audience, as they
did when prompted with the follow-up question, “Has this question ever caused you any anxiety?”
Wapnick reveals that the problem with this question lies in the fact that it forces one to make a choice. This
question doesn’t support an individual choosing multiple professions; rather, it supports the idea of destiny—the
romanticized idea that it is our purpose in life to find, and devote our existence to, our life’s true calling.
She believes it is in our better interest to ask the question of “where we learnt to associate the meaning of wrong,
or abnormal, with doing many things.”
The problem is people is thinking to much about what happen next, we are aiming for our interests and the jobs
for our lifetime, but can we do it in fast way? Life is too short it have a steps, just let us trust the process. We have
a lot of interest just like in school. Every people are devoted to time and energy and sometimes money is in our
field, but eventually this sense of boredom, but life is challenging. Anxiety can attack you as quick as it wants but
the only one who can defeat it is yourself. Do not sabotage yourself, don’t be afraid of your success.
I learn that always ask yourself for a reason and the meaning of wrong or abnormal things.
Just be yourself, embrace your many passions, follow your curiosity, explore your intersections and be
multipotentialites because the world needs us.
