Children’s Story Hour

Sun Porch Bookstore sponsored the Children’s Story Hour every Friday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Central City Public Library. Each month local storytellers participated. Last month, Stella Torres read children’s fairy tales. Parents attending the story hour with their children received a coupon worth 10% off the price of any children’s book at Sun Porch Bookstore.

Summer Reading Contest

Sun Porch Bookstore, Double Decker Ice Cream Store, and several school districts within the San Diego area sponsored a Summer Reading contest. Elementary school students who set and reached summer reading goals received a free ice cream cone from Double Decker and were eligible to participate in a drawing for over $400 in books, software, and school supplies at Sun Porch Bookstore. The drawing was August 10. Information concerning the Summer Reading Contest and entry blanks were available at local elementary schools, Double Decker Ice Cream Stores, and at Sun Porch Bookstore.

Home Delivery

For people who need a special book but don’t have time or transportation to come to the store and pick it up, we have begun a home delivery service. Our regular customers (three purchases in a six-month period) call us at our toll-free number 1-800-BOOKBUY and give us the title (and the author and publisher, if possible) of the book they want. A representative from the store makes a free delivery to the customer’s home and the store bills the customer for the book. We find and deliver a book within three working days at no extra charge.

Summary

The year can best be summarized by quoting from a speech by Reed L. Paige, Store Manager, given to the Board of Directors: This has been an excellent year of growth for Sun Porch Bookstore. Our floor space has increased from 22,500 to 30,800 square feet with the addition of the south wing and the rearrangement of our administrative offices. In addition, retail sales of software have expanded by 12% since last year.
