  • Opening Edo (currently Tokyo) as the headquarters of the Tokugawa Bakufu in 1603 -The social structure based on Confucianism - samurai, then peasant farmers, then artisans, then merchants, and then outcasts-Securing central and local power under Tokugawa Bakufu : daimyo - rulers of a local domain --Dividing samurai lords (daimyo) into 3 categories:--Shinpan (family), Fudai (close friends), and Tozama (rest) - **-Sankin kotai - alternate attendance - some daimyo given duty in Edo to serve the shogun
  • wife and son are forced to live with shogun as hostages as a measure to quell uprising**
