Glassdoor reviews of Linkedin Glassdoor is a service used by verified employees of a company to review it anonymously. Glassdoor does not express opinions of its own on the site. The reviews on the website are left by current or former employees, to provide a better insight for potential applicants. The source will be useful in analyzing the employee motivation and the reality of working at the company in question. The source may have some reviews by disgruntled employees that may not be accurately reflecting the company’s work environment. Anticipated Difficulties Solutions Sources may be biased. Analyze a variety of sources, using OPVL analysis to evaluate it. Since LinkedIn has a good company image, sources will not be objective in recognizing the negatives of LinkedIn. Evaluate the objectivity of each source, considering the proximity to the company. The employee data for LinkedIn may be hard to find after its acquisition by Microsoft in 2016. Look extensively for employee statistics. Otherwise, use data from surveys to assess employee motivation. Introduction This research project will be investigating the human resources management at LinkedIn. The research question is “How do the work culture and leadership styles at LinkedIn affect levels of employee motivation, general impression of the company and treatment of employees?” This is of current interest since LinkedIn is often regarded as one of the best companies to work for; investigating the factors behind this may be beneficial for other companies to find new ways to improve motivation levels and may help individuals to adapt strategies to increase their motivation. It will also validate the reasons behind the high motivation levels at LinkedIn. This research report informs readers about the various concepts of HRM and their tangible effects on employee motivation. The 3 main sources used are the LinkedIn careers website, glassdoor.com reviews of LinkedIn and Forbes’ article on LinkedIn’s culture. Brief Overview LinkedIn is a recruitment/employment social platform, connecting employers and employees. It offers users professional networking services as well as online training courses through its LinkedIn Learning platform. It was founded in 2002 and acquired by Microsoft in 2016. As of 2019, it has 14,000 employees ("Linkedin Corporation"). Corporate Culture At LinkedIn, there is a strong culture and employees identify with the company’s core principles and are motivated because of them. On glassdoor.com, the company’s culture and values have been rated 4.4/5 by its employees ("Linkedin"). LinkedIn has publicly shared its core principles: transformation, integrity, collaboration, humor and results ("Linkedin Culture"). Through various initiatives, employees are encouraged to transform such as InDays, a day each month where employees are given time to invest in and transform themselves and the communities around them.
employees. Because of the purpose of the company, to connect people globally, employees often experience a sense of achievement and are motivated by the work itself. Since hygiene factors are provided and many motivators are provided as well, employees at LinkedIn feel very motivated at work. LinkedIn was rated #6 on Glassdoor’s 2019 Employee’s Choice - Best Places to Work ("2019 Best Places To Work"). Leadership Analysis Jeffrey Weiner, the CEO started his tenure in 2008 and since, the company has grown from 338 employees to approximately 14,000 and revenue has increased from $78 million to more than $6 billion ("Jeff Weiner Bio”) (fig. 1.). During this period of growth, Weiner was lauded for strengthening the company’s core values. Weiner believes in empowering employees through delegation by recognizing their individual strengths. Delegation provides subordinates with recognition for their work and a sense of importance (Popomaronis). His leadership style is democratic, sharing decision-making powers with subordinates, resulting in a higher involvement of subordinates. The leadership style can also be considered transformational, where the leader provides the vision and principles for a team and followers believe in and work towards the vision ("Autocratic, Democratic Or Laissez- Faire - What’S Your Leadership Style?"). This requires employees to be highly skilled and somewhat self-motivated. Transformational leaders need to be highly empathetic and self-aware; this is seen in Weiner’s self described style of compassionate leadership and the 96% approval rating of the CEO by employees on Fig. 1. - LinkedIn’s Impressive Revenue Growth under Mr. Weiner. 2009- (Smith)
Glassdoor.com. In glassdoor.com’s 2018 top CEOs employee choice rankings, Jeff Weiner ranked #8 ("Top CEOs 2018”). Rewards A wide variety of rewards are offered at LinkedIn.
Salaries are generally paid to all employees and commissions to salespersons. On achieving their targets, employees are also paid bonuses in addition to salary/ commissions ("Linkedin Corporation”).
Fringe benefits such as phone bill reimbursement, free access to LinkedIn premium, free on-site gym, paid vacation time, travel life insurance, education reimbursements, full health insurance and 12 weeks of maternity and paternity leave are provided to employees. Human resources at LinkedIn attempt to empower the employees to work effectively by offering the best fringe benefits to them. This also attracts more applicants to LinkedIn, thus increasing the talent pool for recruitment. Employees also receive an annual “perk-up” reimbursement to spend on anything not covered by other benefits. LinkedIn is known to have a good 401(k) pension plan as well for employees. Free high-quality food is always available to employees. ("LinkedIn Benefits")
Job enrichment involves assigning more, harder tasks to employees, giving them more responsibility and increasing their sense of achievement and recognition. InDays can also be considered a non-financial reward to employees. Access to the LinkedIn Learning platform (fig. 2.) is offered to all employees with instructional courses by industry professionals to develop their Fig. 2. - LinkedIn Learning Platform ("Linkedin Learning")
HRM Issues No apparent HRM issues were found for LinkedIn. However, it is important to mention that both LinkedIn and its parent company, Microsoft Inc, do not have trade unions. This is typical of large technology companies with high growth prospects. In the case of LinkedIn, other communication channels are available for grievances to be addressed. Conclusion In conclusion, the work culture and leadership at LinkedIn greatly affect the levels of employee motivation at the company. The culture has clear values and principles, rooted in the company’s beginnings, allowing employees to identify with it. The CEO of the company also influences employees’ motivation in a major way. Weiner’s leadership style is democratic and transformational, inspiring employees to change and aligning their sense of purpose with the company. Hygiene factors and motivators are provided as well as many financial and non-financial rewards. These cause a very positive image of the company, excellent treatment of employees and high employee motivation levels at the company.
The research question was changed to cover a wider range of topics. It could have been better worded. The broader question allowed research into more HRM topics.
Sources were recorded by saving links into the report directly to be cited later. The information from the sources was used effectively throughout the report. More information about employee statistics would have been better.
A basic outline of the report was already provided; this made the drafting process easier. The flow of the report works well, repeating a few topics to emphasize their importance.
The writing method worked well by keeping the source and the report on the screen at the same time. The main body appears to have been structured and written well, using subject specific language.
The normal MLA 8 format was used along with online tools to help cite sources. The citations were properly organized after following the proper guidelines.
The project could’ve been completed on a much faster time-frame if it was started earlier. However, it could not be due of unavoidable reasons. If the report was more concise, more topics like the work-life balance of employees could have been discussed.
