  1. In the latest letter from your grandparents you learn that they think that it is time that they had a computer like the other households in the family. They have seen one in a second hand shop and are consulting you about whether it will be able to store and display the family history.

Write them an explanation of the nature of a P.C. and what you would expect to have in the package that you buy. Relate this to their question about the family history.

Credit will be given for a thorough explanation pitched at the level of knowledge indicated by their letter. [20]

  1. You have been told that a computer only stores 1s and 0s but you have also been told that it can store and manipulate any information.

a) Discuss in what sense it only stores 1s and 0s and how it stores larger values. [4]

b) Discuss the storage of text and pictures. [6]

c) Give examples of how the computer can process: (i) numbers; (ii) text; (iii) pictures. [10]

  1. Name THREE input devices that a desktop computer might have. Explain how they are used. Discuss their advantages and disadvantages. For each device discuss how it might be connected to the rest of the computer. [20]
