Jeff Till 905371499 Friday 12:20 PM Essay Topic # Young adults have always had different views on cultural, political, and social issues than their elder generation. This is no different for views on sexual and romantic relationships. Over the past few generations teenagers and young adults have become less and less attached to many of their sexual partners than their previous generations. Attachment to a sexual partner has become something of the past, and psychologists and scientists believe that there are multiple reasons behind this change. One reason is the environments that teens and young adults are now growing up in, and how the demands influence their thoughts. However not just the environment is playing a role in shaping the sexual views of teenagers and young adults, but also the views of adults about them. These views have changed the development of teenagers and young adults. In the past when two individuals had an intimate relationship, it was due to the love that they had for one another. They believed that they could trust one another and shared a romantic connection with each other. However, this has completely changed for the younger generation. Nowadays teenagers and young adults have a different view about sexual relationships. They do not see them as intimate relationships, and have very little attachment to their sexual partners (Schmitt, 2008). Even though sexual thoughts are normal and healthy for teenagers and young adults, many people feel that the way this generation is dealing with
these feelings is wrong. Because of these differences in approaches, teenagers and young adults are treated in a different way. The social development of this generation of teens and young adults has been shaped by the way they are being treated by older generations. The older generations are viewing this view of sex that young adults and teens are having as negative, even though all generations of young adults have been preoccupied with sex, just in different ways. As a result adults are not focusing on how to develop teens into a fully functioning and successful person, but rather on changing their views on sex (Allen, 2007). This affects the relationships that young and old generations interact with each other. Young generations feel like they are being told what to do by their parents and elders, and therefore do not have as good of relationships with them as they could, if there was a mutual respect for each other’s views. However, it is not the fault of either generation that their views differ. Studies have shown that as time has gone on and the demands of society have become increasingly more, and the environment that teens and young adults are now growing up in has become much more high stress, the attachment between sexual partners has lessened (Schmitt, 2008). The thought of sex has become more of a stress reliever, and a way to have fun, more that a romantic and intimate relationship with another individual. It has also been shown that in families that have a lot of instability, the children are much more likely to condone in such frivolous sexual fantasies to get away from the harsh setting that they live in (Cavanagh, 2008). So although the cultural values of sexual relationships in teenagers and young adults have changed over the generations, it is no one’s fault but that of time. As time has gone on
