Abstract

For the highly integrated information society at the 21st century, it will be essential to establish human-like information processing technology such as learning, memorization, association, intuition, motivation, and the utilization of values. The R&D theme for this technology will focus on the development bf novel devices and systems by eliciting the principles and key roles of information processing functions of the brain and in living organisms through a wide range of interdisciplinary R&D from semiconductor device technology to brain science. This R&D, i.e. brain function oriented information processing, or Brainware, will influence the development of new products in areas such as consumable electronics and health and medical care instruments, and will contribute to improving social life in the next century. In this report, the activities being carried out by the Leading Research Committee (sendo kenkyu) on Brainware are described. The committee has been formed in order to promote the Brainware R&D by surveying and analyzing technological trends and current problems in related fields of research. The committee met five times and was composed of managers from national laboratories, universities, and industries. The concept and the research theme of Brainware in particular were discussed. It is thought that important research targets are in elucidating brain functions and the modeling and development of novel devices and systems, such as brain information architecture, neural devices, neural networks, and man-machine interface. Technical trend surveys in the USA, Germany, and the UK were also carried out. A Brainware workshop was held to investigate a wide range of research trends and problems concerning related subjects, during which top scientists from Japan and abroad made presentations. The organization and structure of research were also discussed.

(ix)

Brainware R&D requires broad knowledge, from biology to application engineering. It is therefore essential to have tight cooperation in different areas of research such as brain science, biology, genetic engineering, information science, and materials science. In order to establish this R&D, global collaboration in national laboratories, universities and industries, and the establishment of research schemes are urgently required.
