Self-Reflection Description of the experience, activity or event: I attended a networking event called the Hub Networking Mixer at the Ted Rogers School of Management campus on Monday, October 23, 2023, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. This event provided students with an opportunity to meet and network with recruiters from seven different organizations who were educating us about the exciting co-op, internship, and new graduate opportunities they had available. Their primary objective was to engage students with their programs and benefits, and possibly hire some students to work in the summertime. This event was a valuable experience for me as it allowed me to exercise and develop my curiosity. Although my initial intention was to simply engage in conversation with others, I found myself becoming increasingly intrigued by the organizations present and the benefits they offered as I became more comfortable with my surroundings. I chose to attend this event to gain a better understanding of co-op programs and their benefits. My aim for attending was to become more familiar with co-op opportunities in general, as I find them intriguing. Feelings and thoughts about the experience: As someone who struggles with social anxiety, being around a large crowd can be daunting. Naturally, I felt a bit nervous and anxious at the start of this experience. However, being in the company of my friends helped me stay calm throughout the majority of the event. We took the opportunity to ask the recruiters questions about co-op programs, which added to our knowledge and made the experience worthwhile. Afterward, I felt a sense of relief knowing that I had gained valuable insights into certain programs. I feel that I have achieved my objective of understanding the numerous benefits these co-op programs offer and now have a better understanding of what I would like to do in the future. During the event, my goal was to acquire knowledge that could help me make informed decisions post- graduation. I wanted to feel more comfortable asking questions, as I've been too scared to do so in the past. Evaluation of the experience, both good and bad: In my opinion, this experience proved to be informative as it aided me in understanding the various co-op programs that are available and their advantages, which can assist me in securing a promising career in the future. One of the other good highlights of this experience was connecting with a recruiter who studied business management at Toronto Metropolitan University. They provided valuable
advice regarding the program and the major itself. However, the downside of this experience was that it wasn't well-structured, and it led to overcrowding and chaos as there were too many people everywhere. Unfortunately, due to the disorganized nature of the event, I was unable to speak with all of the recruiters present. During the event, other students and I positively contributed by actively listening to others and demonstrating interest in their organizations through relevant questions. We had one-on-one conversations with recruiters, listening to their feedback and taking it into consideration. Analysis to make sense of the situation: In my opinion during the event, I believe that the recruiters did a great job engaging with us, the curious students. They provided us with useful and reliable information whenever we asked questions, instead of giving irrelevant responses. On the other hand, I believe that the booths could have been better organized. They were too close to each other, causing students to scatter everywhere as mentioned before. There were some aspects that didn't go as planned on my part too. I missed the chance to ask certain questions to some recruiters due to lack of time or my own unpreparedness, which resulted in me forgetting some of the questions. During the event, several individuals, including myself, asked numerous questions to gain a better understanding of the co-op programs and their benefits for students. It was evident that many attendees were keen to learn about the various opportunities available, which resulted in a shared perspective among us. Having prior knowledge from research about some of the organizations present in the current experience has aided my understanding of the situation. I am aware of their background and the type of organization they are, which has led me to prioritize asking them questions before approaching other organizations. Conclusion about what you learned and what you could have done differently: Through attending the event, I gained valuable insights into different co-op programs and the advantages they offer. I learned about many post-university career opportunities. I have come to understand that choosing a major in university or college does not limit one to a particular career path. For instance, if you decide to major in marketing, it does not mean that your only option is to become a marketer. You can venture into any business-related fields that you find interesting or fulfilling. However, looking back, I feel I could have engaged more with other attendees instead of limiting my interactions to recruiters from participating organizations and a select few friends who accompanied me. I also would have managed my time differently, as it got the best of me and I couldn't ask all the
