3. Microprocessor : Microprocessor - This is the heart of the compute i f itself. A microprocessor incorporates the functions o a computer's central processing unit(CPU) on a single integrated circuit (IC). Microprocessor is a multi- Purpose, programmable device that accepts digital data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and Provides results as output. It has got an Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU) for this operation. The entire Operations of the processors are controlled by a Control Unit. Microprocessors operate on Numbers and symbols represented in the binary numeral system. The Personal Computer, when introduced by IBM in 1981, used an Intel 8088 CPU running at 4.77MHz. Later on, faster and better microprocessors were introduced in the market. Some obsolete processors form Intel are 8088, 80286, 80386, 80486, Pentium, Pentium MMXx Pentium Pro, Pentium ll, Pentium Ill etc. Intel and AMD are the major players j Itanium processors are used in server computers. AMD has processors named Duron, Sempron, Athlon (all used in PCs) and Opteron (used in servers).
