Mobile IP

Outline

Mobile IP

Mobile IP entities

Mobile IP Support Services

 Discovery

Registration

Mobile IP Tunneling

Problems with Mobile IP

2

Mobile IP Entities

Mobile Node (MN)

The entity that may change its point of attachment from network to network in the Internet Assigned a permanent IP in its home address

Home Agent (HA)

This is router with additional functionality Located on home network of MN Does mobility binding of MN’s IP with its COA Forwards packets to appropriate network when MN is away

4

Mobile IP Entities

Foreign Agent (FA)

Another router with enhanced functionality If MN is away from HA , it uses FA to send/receive data to/from HA Advertises itself periodically Forward’s MN registration request Decapsulates messages for delivery to MN

Care-of-address (COA)

Address which identifies MN current location Sent by FA to HA when MN attaches Usually the IP address of the FA

Correspondent Node (CN)

End host to which MN is corresponding

5

Agent advertisement

Type: 16, indicates that this is an agent advertisement Length: Number of bytes in the extension Sequence Number: The count of agent advertisement messages sent since the agent was initialized Lifetime: Time in seconds, that this agent is willing to accept a registration request from a mobile node Care-of-Address: The care-of address or addresses supported by this agent on this network

7

Registration

Goal: inform the home agent of current location of MN (COA-FA or co-located COA) Registration expires automatically (lifetime)

8

Registration Reply

Type: 3, indicates that this is a registration reply Code: Indicates result of the registration request Home Address: The home IP address of the mobile node Home Agent: The IP address of the mobile node's home agent

11

Mobile IP Tunneling

12

Used to forward IP datagrams from a

home address to a COA

Encapsulation I

14

 IP-within-IP-encapsulation

Encapsulation I

  • ver = 4 for IP version
  • IHL =length of the outer header
  • TOS is just copied from the inner header
  • length field covers the complete encapsulated packet
  • tunnel entry as source address (the IP address of the HA)
  • tunnel exit point as destination address (the COA)
