Smart Antenna

 “It is Antenna that makes it wireless”  A smart Antenna System combines multiple antenna elements with a signal processing capability to optimize it’s radiation pattern automatically in response to signal environment  For higher performance  Narrower sectors  Too many handoffs  Smart Antenna: Multi beam antenna or adaptive array without handoffs between beams

Types of Smart Antenna

System

 Switched Beam: A finite number of fixed, predefined patterns or combining strategies(Sectors)  Adaptive array: Infinite number of patterns that are adjusted in real time (Scenarios)

Adaptive array

 Most advanced smart antenna approach  It provides an optimal gain while simultaneously identifying tracking and minimizing interfering signal

Goal of Smart Antenna

Systems

 The purpose of smart antenna system is to augment the signal quality of radio-based system through more focused transmission of radio signal while enhancing capacity through increase frequency reuse.  The Feature of smart antenna systems are  Signal gain  Interference Rejection  Power Efficiency

Benefits of Switch beam and

adaptive array

 Integration  Range or Coverage  Interference Suppression

Benefits of Switch beam and

adaptive array

Advantages of Smart

Antennas

 Both phased and adaptive array provide increased power by providing higher gain for the desired signal  In term of interference suppression, phased array reduce the probability of interference with the narrower beam and adaptive array adjust the beam pattern to suppress interference

Uses of Smart Antenna

 Phased array are mainly being studied for point to point wireless systems  Adaptive arrays are being considered on cellular terminals where local scattering causes wide angular spread  In the TDM system ANSI-136 adaptive antenna systems have been widely deployed

 Thank You!
