Week 8: Course Reflection
1. How have your attitudes changed about selecting appropriate
medications based on patient presentation and unique patient factors?
a. Prior to starting this course, my attitude towards selecting the correct
class of medication based on presentation and symptoms were at a
beginner level. I was able to gain a good basis of knowledge upon
completion of my prior class, which was Advanced Pharmacology
Fundamentals. This course did a great job of supplementing
knowledge by a variety of assignments, required readings, online
continuing education modules and projects. This has allowed me to
become more confident in my pharmacological knowledge, thus
allowing me to be more successful at prescribing medications to
patients in the future.
2. How confident do you feel about selecting an appropriate pharmaceutical
agent for a patient with a specific diagnosis in the primary care setting?
What resources are needed, if any, to help you feel more confident?
a. My confidence level is at a moderate level. My basis of knowledge has
definitely expanded throughout the course. Each module allowed me
to analyze different factors that go into making an appropriate drug
prescription, which is based on the HPI, ROS, social/family history and
physical exam. Based on the knowledge gained I would be able to
suggest a medication based on a specific diagnosis.
3. How has your understanding changed about determining the
therapeutic effects, adverse responses, and side effects of drug
therapy?

3. How has your understanding changed about determining the

therapeutic effects, adverse responses, and side effects of drug therapy?

a. My understanding regarding these components of prescriptive practice have greatly increased compared to the beginning of the course. This class began to focus in on the unique characteristics of each drug class, as well as understanding what a practitioner should consider and monitor for after initiating pharmacological treatment. I thought I was able to learn baseline data needed, as well as therapeutic goals for many medications.

4. Reflect on your preparedness to write appropriate prescriptions according

to evidence- based practice guidelines. What resources are needed, if any, to help you feel more prepared? a. Throughout the course I had many opportunities to participate in CME’s which provided extensive evidence-based practice guidelines. Such resources include the National HIV Curriculum projection, as well as the National STD Curriculum. Moving forward resources such as these can be accessed via the CDC or the HRSA.

5. How do you feel about your ability to identify and respond to legal and

ethical issues related to safe prescribing practices? What resources are needed, if any, to help you feel more prepared? a. I feel more confident that I will be able to abide by the prescribe laws in my intended state of practice of Florida. Upon completion of our module 7 presentation, we had to conduct research on the practice abilities of NP’s given the state. In the future if I have any questions or concerns regarding an unfamiliar drug, I can turn to the Florida Board of Nursing website, as well as sites such as the AMA and the NCSL.

6. Reflect on your preparedness to determine whether pharmacologic

therapy is appropriate for an individual patient? What resources are
